Hampire

So corny it's actually kind of good. They should have named the movie, "My Grandpa is a Hampire" the way he hams it up throughout the movie. The kids in the movie act more like four or five year olds than their actual age. Kids that age in real life would have to be forced to dance to Mozart and definitely wouldn't dance like they had been cattle prodded. If you can put your brain on mush mode for a while it can be kind of enjoyable.

a nightflying visual treat

it was the summer of 93' and in my bored childhood i meanderd along shawlands road in glasgow. on this warm day it was perhaps the only time that year that i had wanted to be home. i headed home and this time took another route. on this route i stumbled upon a video rental shop untill now unknown to me. i slowly opened the door and pushed away the hanging string beads. and old lady with hair as dark as the night looked down on me. she was fat, about fourteen stone and i jerked back as i noticed the boil on her cheeck. she watched me as a hawk, suspiciously. her phone rang and she went behind a door to andswer it. There, behind the desk, glowing in majesty, was a video tape hidden from the world. my curios mind ticked over with questions, before i even considerd what i had done my hand was behind the counter. i opened the door to leave and i heard the gypsey woman shout "child, you leave this shop with that video and i promise you will regret it". i ignored her advice and ran like the wind, it took me 20 minuets to get home, i was horribly out of breath. Then, locking myself in my bedroom i slapped it on. the minuets past, the mytic ways of this video were undeniable, for the gypsey was right, i did regret taking what i now regard as the worst video i have ever viewed.

Al Lewis as an elderly vampire - what inspired casting!

Actor Al Lewis began his career with an uncredited part in a '50s vampire movie (I Vampiri), and is best known for playing a vampire in The Munsters in the '60s. And he was still flashing those fangs and swishing his cape in the '90s, starring in children's comedy/horror movie My Grandpa is a Vampire (AKA Moonrise). When it comes to kids' movies, I prefer it if there is something for the adults to enjoy as well, but My Grandpa is a Vampire is strictly for the young ones: the humour is aimed squarely at pre-teens and the creepiness is kept to a minimum. I imagine most grown-ups will find the film quite difficult to sit through. Of course, that doesn't mean that it is a terrible film - just not designed for an old git like myself.Lewis plays vampire Vernon Cooger, who has lived his whole life as a human, raising a family and never once touching a drop of blood. When Vernon pops his clogs of old age, his grandson Lonny (Justin Gocke) is very upset, but vampires never really die, and his grandpa rises from his coffin to continue cracking bad jokes and performing magic tricks for Lonny and his best pal Kanzoria (Milan Borich). Keeping grandpa's secret hidden proves tricky, however, and when nosey neighbour Ernie (Noel Appleby) discovers that Vernon is a vampire, he begins sharpening some stakes...The gags in this one are childish and the story is puerile, perfect for undemanding kids who want to watch something silly and spooky (and who don't mind outdated special effects). My advice is to stick this on the telly for the tikes, and then find something better to watch for yourself.
