Plot summary

During the 1200's, legendary Buddhist monk Nichiren returns from his studies to lead Japan out of moral crisis and prepare to fight Mongol invaders by creating a new form of Buddhism. He runs afoul of the existing Buddhist sects and their government supporters and is persecuted. Can Nichiren persevere before the Mongol fleet reaches Japanese shores?

Nichiren and the Great Mongol Invasion' is a war film based on the actual world and war history of the Middle Ages, when the Great Yuan Empire, the world's strongest military hegemonic empire, forcibly conscripted and deployed Goryeo troops for its expedition to Japan. It's a masterpiece. I saw it a long time ago, and it's nice to see it again through an introduction like this.In actual history, the Yuan-Goryeo combined forces-composed of the army of the Great Yuan Empire (Yuan Dynasty), the world's strongest army, along with its reconnaissance units and the Goryeo troops who were forcibly conscripted and placed at the vanguard as 'arrow fodder'-massacred the Japanese samurai. They wielded the world's strongest cavalry tactics, steel scimitars (shinwoldo), and new weapons (like cheolpo (explosive weapons/hand cannons)), unleashing their 'world's strongest,' overwhelming military might.The legacy of destruction, catastrophe, and terror left by this Great Yuan Empire's invasion of Japan was so overwhelming and powerful that the term 'Mukuri Kokuri' still remains in the Japanese language today.This is a Japanese compound word combining 'Mukuri' (referring to the Mongol Empire's forces) and 'Kokuri' (referring to Goryeo). Because the invasion by the 'world's strongest' Great Yuan Empire's army was a historical event where the Japanese samurai were utterly unable to resist and were helplessly massacred, this word still remains in Japan-which experienced this history of slaughter-as a term signifying an invading, 'world's strongest' army, or even divine punishment and divine catastrophe itself.

Comment about Actor in film

Well, it was made in Japan in 1958 about a 13th century Religious leader, so....bearing that in mind (and yes it is the only film ever about Nichiren Daishonin) .... but that's not why I wish to comment today ...it is Kazuo Hasegawa ( 長谷川 一夫 ) 1908 to 1984 who is acting as "Nichiren" in the movie (His last film was in 1963 if I recall correctly).It's just an interesting film for weird people like me hahaha, I wouldn't recommend it to the average viewer. I like old American movies too, like old Charlie Chaplin stuff and others I've long forgotten (for only having seen them online and only once at that).
