Rebecca Marder in a better-than-expected film

"Somewhere there is a cemetery for all the tunes I found and lost."I love Rebecca Marder. She is one of the half dozen actors whose every film I try to catch. Incredibly intense, sincere, and present in every scene, she is destined for intellectual's and artist's roles. No background wife-and-girlfriend gig for her ...She is at her best as an aspiring folk singer Marcia in _Not My Type_, a far more interesting film than you might expect. No character is as straight-forward as he/she appears.She works with her idol, former rock star Daredjane (Judith Chemla, Marder's costar in _Simone: Woman of the Century_, almost unrecognizable under aging make-up), on a joint album. Marcia lives in a houseboat on the Seine with Ivry (Eye Haidara, castmates in _Someone, Somewhere_ who can matches Marder's intensity), an artist/designer working for the government. It is a dream life, impossibly poetic and exalted.Sure enough, it cannot last.Daredjane soon dies. Her only heir Anthony (Felix Moati) is a hustler who has his own mercenary ideas about the unreleased songs.There are perhaps too many twists to this character the Parisian Marcia dismisses deep-down as a "hick." But the artists turn out not to be so pure or broad-minded either.Except Marcia herself, the eternal straight arrow, who is perhaps too beautiful for this self-promoting music world.Chemla and Marder sings all their own songs; the fake 90s tracks by Chemla are cringe- inducing, but the present-day ones make you wish they would release the soundtrack. Marder passes the songster test with flying colors on top of everything. What else can't she do? Director Michel Leclerc is best known in the U. S. for his multi-Cesar winning _The Names of Love_, and his own birthplace Bures-sur-Yvette is the butt of some savage jokes in the film. It is a very good effort by all involved.
