Plot summary

How much is contained in these two words—irritation, tenderness, laughter, love. And a little shame, when she knows everything about you. Even what you yourself have forgotten. This film is about all mothers and for all of us. About those moments when you say, “Mooom, don’t start”—and she starts. About the calls with the question, “Have you eaten?” when you are in a courtroom or on a date. About superpowers that work even thousands of kilometers away.

Falls flat

Having learned a bit of Ukrainian on Duolingo, I wanted to see this film. Maybe I'll understand a few words? (The English subtitles saved me.)The cinema was packed with Ukrainians. I've never seen that many people staying after the film, talking with each other, hugging each other...Where the film excels is the filming and the acting. Where it falls flat is the screenwriting. The film is full of talk. The camera almost never gives you time to let a scene unfold and influence you, and the film almost never communicates non-verbally. When the last word is spoken, it just cuts to the next scene. The only episode that emotionally spoke to me was when mom and daughter went kayaking. The only time the film wasn't hurrying to reach the 90 minute mark.

Nice but strangely lifeless film

Visually, this is a very pleasant film. The nostalgic views of Kyiv are wonderful and create a warm, gentle atmosphere. The movie avoids vulgarity and even includes some light humor, which I appreciated.Watching it on March 8 in Vienna, far away from home, made the experience even more emotional for me.Seeing those familiar streets and places immediately triggered a feeling of nostalgia.. However, the biggest problem is the acting.Unfortunately, I simply didn't believe any of it. Most of the performances feel stiff and wooden, and the emotional scenes that are supposed to move the audience never quite land.Ironically, the most genuine and touching moment comes at the very end, when the film shows childhood photos of the actors. That brief sequence felt more authentic than many of the dramatic scenes in the movie.
