A gritty return to form for the legendary Pasikowski-Linda duo

Solid, gritty thriller from the iconic duo of director Wladyslaw Pasikowski and actor Boguslaw Linda. The film masterfully captures the grim reality of Communist Poland (PRL) - the suffocating atmosphere and systemic indifference strongly reminded me of the best works by Wojciech Smarzowski.Boguslaw Linda, as 'Bruno,' proves once again why he remains the king of Polish crime cinema; you can truly feel the weight of his character's experiences. While the plot feels a bit stretched at times, the overall atmosphere and Linda's swan song performance make it a must-watch.A strong 7/10 for the realism and sharp dialogue.

Film Review: Zamach na Papieza Rating: 7/10

Zamach na Papieza is an intriguing film that tells its story in a compelling and engaging way. Although it is not based on factual events-relying instead on speculation and hypothetical scenarios-the narrative is presented in a manner that keeps the viewer interested throughout. The film dives into the ruthless nature of intelligence services and exposes the corruption of those in power, painting a bleak but fascinating picture of global politics. The main character is genuinely likable and portrayed with solid acting, making it easy to connect with him as the plot unfolds. Despite the film's relatively slow pacing, it remains watchable and maintains a steady level of tension. There are, however, some technical shortcomings. For example, the iconic PSG-1 rifle is replaced with a G-33, which may bother more detail-oriented viewers. Still, these inaccuracies are minor enough that one can overlook them without too much trouble.Overall, Zamach na Papieza delivers an engaging, thought-provoking experience that, while imperfect, is certainly worth watching.

Strange And Lukewarm

I gave it 6 because of Linda and Pasikowski, but I was disappointed, to say the least. While the production and acting were alright, with occasional highlights in the script, the overall package that is Operation Pope is, objectively speaking, mediocre at best.I can't tell what the film wants to be; a metaphor for the nature of evil and a philosophical pontification about it? Because it ain't a thriller, political or otherwise, or an action film. Neither is it a reconstruction of the actual historical events. I mean, the film is pretty sociopathic the way it's written and put together. It's like someone's weird dream they've just had and decided to film...but didn't have the realisation right after waking up, as one usually does, that, in reality, it was total goddamn nonsense!Pasikowski and artsy-fartsy films just don't go together, I'm sorry.A lot about the film is just wrong. And why the hell do the Russian characters speak like they're wind-up toys, especially the main guy, whatever the hell his name was!? I was looking at him and I couldn't stop thinking about Gary Oldman's character (Mason Verger) in Hannibal. Any minute I was expecting him to turn around in his wheelchair and call out "Cordell!" :-DAnd don't get me started about the whole Pope thing. The only things Pope-related in the damn movie are a few portraits of him here and there, some archival footage in the beginning of the movie, and two or three scenes around the Vatican that last seconds at a time! Like I said, the movie ain't what you thought it was going to be at all! At all!The characters behave like parodies of people as well. They seem like someone took the word "cynical" and cranked the definition of it up to 11! You know, in places, the movie resembled...freaking "Sin City". Not the look but the feel of it, I mean. I watched "Sin City" once when it came out in 2005, thought it was dog$hit, and that was me done with the whole Sin City "business"! That's how I feel about "Operation Pope". My rating of 6 is purely due to my soft spot for Pasikowski's earlier works and Boguslaw Linda. If you want my honest and unbiased score, it'd probably be between 4 and 5.PS. I did love the callback to "Psy" in the beginning of the movie with the examination committee though - very neat :-)
