Lo ví en español, saw it in spanish. Summary: Atmsopheric masterpiece, but it was also selfimportant and cryptic

Very strong acting, treamendous cinematography, great soundtrack. I was extremely lost in some parts, which almost never happens when I watch things in spanish.It all worked to be extremely atmospheric and aesthetically pleasing visually and as a unique period drama. Where this film falls is in its crypticness. It comes off as extremely enigmatic on purpose. I got the sense that it demanded praise from me for its byzantine nature, as if it wanted to say: "isn't this movie amazing?" But I'm not actually sure how much it was actually trying to say about Mexico itself. As a veteran of Mexican films, I think it tried to come off clever without actually having profunditiy.My senses were pleased throughout, the period accurate spanish, the delivery of lines, and the rich ambience were all chillingly good. But it was oddly scant in substance and looking back I wouldn't know how to summarize it in a captivating way.Am not a native spanish speaker, yet.Have not read the novel.

This is not a rating for the book

I have not read it, it is a rating for the movie, which must be a stand alone work of art and if it needs a book or an external manual to comprehend, then this is not a good sign.Overall it is a mediocre movie. It starts very nicely with great cinematography and a successful use of magical realism on screen. In the beginning it is like a mystery film, of a man lost in a place full of sad ghosts that exist only as a metaphor. But there is also another storyline, that of the past which is realistic.The problem, as I see it, is that the heavy use of metaphor (which becomes increasingly difficult to follow, especially if you are not a native Mexican who has also read the book) interchanged with a myriad of not very interesting backstories make the movie heavier in the second half and rather boring in the end. Also it seems to forget to close the first storyline (?).

Good movie

I live in Small city from the north of Mexico and I feel really related to this movie. My grand mother told me a few story's about our ancestries and events that happened time ago on our city. And I can tell you that the people in Mexico it really acted like that. I loved this movie I really recommend to watch!!!. Im going to tell you one of my grandmother story "one time in my city a guy wearing a charro suit was walked around the streets until he find the guy that he was looking for and he just shot him right in the chest and killed him, then he walked away disappearing in the dry river while the police and people were looking for him,but no one never knew who he was or why he kill the guy from my town.
