Enjoyable film that sends the audience the wrong message that control is okay

Not Every Ride Is Freedom

I'm still sitting with 'Pillion', and honestly, I'm conflicted. There's no denying it's confident, stylish, and deliberately provocative. Alexander Skarsgård has that effortless magnetism, and Harry Melling brings a raw, awkward vulnerability that's genuinely affecting. The world it builds feels specific and intentional, and at times it's darkly funny and strangely tender. But here's where it lost me.I couldn't shake the feeling that the film drifts into suggesting that staying in a relationship where you're quietly unhappy, unfulfilled, or just going along with what your partner wants is somehow acceptable, even romantic. And I'm not on with that. Submission, power dynamics, desire, all of that can be complex and valid when there's agency and joy on both sides. What unsettled me is how often that line feels blurred here.Instead of interrogating imbalance, 'Pillion' sometimes seems to normalise emotional compromise as growth. And for a film that wants to be bold and progressive, that left a slightly sour taste. It's thought-provoking, yes. Beautifully acted, absolutely. But I walked away uneasy rather than enlightened, and not in a way that felt intentional. One I'm glad I saw, but not one I'm convinced by.
