A Beautifully Broken Blueprint: A Review of Playroom (1990)

There are films that are masterpieces, and then there are films that are fascinating maps of what might have been. Manny Coto's Playroom-or Schizo, depending on which continent your VHS tape washed ashore on-is firmly the latter. To watch it is to piece together a puzzle with half the pieces missing, and to find that the resulting image is more haunting and memorable than a complete picture ever could have been. It's a 6/10 in the best possible way: a glorious, ambitious, and beautifully broken artifact from the twilight of the video store era.Shot in the stark, ancient landscapes of Yugoslavia, the film immediately feels alien. This is not the familiar suburbia of a typical American slasher. This is a place of cold stone and long shadows, a perfect backdrop for a story that unearths a demonic evil alongside archaeological remains. Director Manny Coto, even with a shoestring budget, demonstrates a keen eye for atmosphere. He uses the foreign location not just as a setting, but as a character, creating a palpable sense of isolation that elevates the film beyond its script's more tangled ambitions. When the supernatural horror kicks in, it feels genuinely intrusive, a hot-blooded nightmare bleeding into a cold, forgotten world. The film is anchored by a cast of familiar faces, chief among them a delightfully unhinged Christopher McDonald. But the true heart of this strange machine is our It Girl, Lisa Aliff. As the troubled protagonist returning to the site of her childhood trauma, she provides the film's grounding emotional core. In an era filled with one-dimensional horror heroines, Aliff brings a quiet, haunted strength to the role. Her performance is the thread of humanity we cling to as the narrative spirals into a fever dream of demonic children and psychological collapse. She possesses that specific, luminous quality of the best B-movie stars: an ability to project genuine soul and sincerity even when surrounded by the wonderfully absurd.Let's be clear: the film is a narrative mess. Its plot, which mashes together a slasher, a ghost story, and a possession thriller, often feels more like a collection of interesting ideas than a cohesive story. But in the true spirit of what we do here at Deep Dive Cinema, its flaws are part of its charm. This is a film that wasn't afraid to be weird, to be overstuffed, to aim for the moon even if it only cleared the treetops.

I was surprised to see that the other user reviews for this were so completely positive. I will say that the look of the film was great, the direction well observed and the sets and locations effective. The problems with this film, however, are mainly in the characters--none of them are really likeable(the main characters girlfriend, played by Lisa Aliff is alright) with the annoying award going to the lead actor(Christopher McDonald) who is too over the top for you to have ANY sympathy for him. The main character's "playmate" that appears to him at the old monastery is another annoying character you'd just like to slap. The playmates "real" self is just as bad coming across as a cheap Yoda clone that spouts incredibly lame wisecracks that quickly grows stale. Vincent Schiavelli(who played the weird biology teacher in Fast Times At Ridgemont High), who has ties to the past at the monastery, is somewhat amusing in his whacked out role but when all is said and done this could have been a better movie. Maybe if the characters were a little more likeable or sympathetic the other shortcomings would have been overshadowed but as it stands it's mainly worth checking out for the overall look of the monastery, as well as location shots and a couple of imaginative kills. OK, but not all that special.

"Schizo" or "Playroom" has a close and mystical atmosphere, but it is not the psychological thriller it claims and wants to be. The story twist is too fast moving concerning to what you know about the main character from the beginning of the movie.Chris, played by Chris McDonnell of "Happy Gilmore", never has the sympathy of the viewer. McDonnell's acting is overdone. The other characters, Marcy (Jamie Rose) and Paul, seem to be only important for being killed by Chris, who turns into a murderer way to fast. But...nice ways to kill the others...!Wonderful landscape, average story.5 out of 10
