Awful, false advertising

Good premise started well, but took an odd digression

In the end, the appropriate genre labels for this film are "psychological suspense" more than "horror." It started out as an interesting zombie apocalypse tale, when the kids were out in open territory, and would have been interesting to see them have more of an epic journey to the purportedly safe land. But that introduction turned out to be a red herring, leading them into a claustrophobic trap after just a few minutes. The rest of the film is spent wondering whether the kids will ever work up the courage to overwhelm their single captor by teaming up to attack, or just continue to cower at the point of her shotgun while she divides to conquer. Criticizing this film for the characters taking stupid actions is kind of hypocritical; if you watch this genre habitually, you have already learned to expect that and excuse it for the sake of being chilled and thrilled by the violence and gore. That said, Michelle Dockery was wonderfully creepy here; Zoe Colletti was more than adequate as the most mature of the children who guilefully earned the opportunity to turn the tables on the captor; Regan Aliyah was acceptable in her role, and the rest of the cast ranged from just short of ordinary (Giancarlo Esposito) to downright awful. For what the writers decided it should end up as, it was not as overall terrible as most reviewers claimed, but it certainly would have been better if it ended as it started, with the band on a journey. Other production values were ordinary at best. 4.5 stars rounded up.

Ruined by cliches and bad character decisions

Cool premise, really liked the idea and the first half kept my interest for sure. But after that it's just dumb character decision after dumb character decision. The acting is okay too but the writing is so bad in the second half that I almost just turned it off. It's things like when you're getting attacked or held by gun and don't take the gun or subdue the attacker that really make the last 1/3 unwatchable. I was yelling at the TV multiple times because the kid characters are so insufferable and stupid. It does have some good acting, the premise is cool and some SFX were good too, but the bad writing ruins the whole thing towards the end. 4.2/10.
