Buddism and the New Wave of Akio Jissoji
Very Dark
There may well be some great profundity here, as Jissoji explores the tensions between tradition, duty, capitalism and, ultimately, environmentalism.
However, (and this is a consistent problem for me) if half of the time your film is literally too dark for people to see what's going on (or even who's in the scene), then you are going to lessen the impact somewhat, I feel. Maybe it's just the cut that's currently on MUBI, but even at maximum brightness I was struggling to follow the indoor scenes. It was thus a great relief when periodically the action moved outside.
I really can't recommend this, therefore - and if I hadn't been doing something else at the same time, would probably have given up.
