I'd rather sit outside during hurricane season and try to dodge things and watch this disaster

Portal in the Pines is the kind of movie that spends so much time trying to figure out what it wants to be that the audience is left confused for most of the runtime. The story jumps between strange ideas involving aliens, mysterious worlds, and possible spiritual elements, but it never fully commits to any clear direction. At moments it almost feels like the film is about to make sense, yet it quickly drifts back into chaotic storytelling that struggles to find its footing.A film like this should build curiosity and tension as the mystery unfolds, but instead it often feels like the narrative is wandering without a clear plan. Rather than creating intrigue, the constant confusion becomes frustrating because viewers are left trying to piece together what the movie is actually attempting to say.The performances also do little to help the situation. The young actor at the center of the film gives a performance that feels awkward and unpolished, which makes it difficult to take the character seriously. Instead of grounding the story, the acting often pulls attention away from the already shaky narrative.Overall, Portal in the Pines ends up feeling like a disorganized experiment rather than a fully developed film. With an unfocused storyline, uneven performances, and a confusing premise, it becomes a frustrating watch that many viewers may find difficult to sit through, let alone recommend.

The ending spoiled it

Too many ideas, none of them working

Sometimes low-rated films turn out to be underrated, and you can find real gems. That's definitely not the case with Portal in the Pines. This film is nowhere close to its current 4.8-star rating, which was the reason I decided to watch it in the first place. I'd say 1.8 would be closer to the truth. There's really not much good to say about the film, as the viewing experience was dull and disappointing at best. I watched it all the way through, hoping it would improve, but it didn't.One serious problem is that the director clearly couldn't decide whether the movie should be about aliens, demons, occultism, alternate dimensions, conspiracies, magic, or a doomsday prophecy-or something else entirely-so they simply threw everything in at once and hoped something would work. Unfortunately, the outcome is quite a mess that makes little sense. There's also a complicated relationship drama layered on top of it all.Another issue is that the acting isn't very convincing. This is particularly noticeable with the protagonist of the film. His ability to perform such a key role with so little excitement or expression is almost an achievement. Naturally, this fails to capture the viewer's interest or engagement. Furthermore, some characters, like Jesse's ex-wife, are extremely annoying and poorly written, showing the same hysterical reaction no matter the situation.Another character that feels out of place is the one-eyed street prophet. I don't even know why he's there-except that he looks like a mix of Odin from the Marvel universe and Ben Kenobi from Star Wars. There were also other Star Wars-inspired moments, such as the occult members looking more like Jedi Knights and the scene where the particle accelerator operator uses the control switchboard. It felt like a direct homage to preparing the Death Star. The best performance came from the character Emma/Evelyn (not even sure which one - I thought the movie said Emma, but she's listed here as Evelyn), who mysteriously appears and disappears throughout the film. I initially thought she would play a key role, but her presence ultimately diminishes to simply being mystical and narrating background information about the events in the story. And then there's the worst part of all: the ending. It feels completely out of the blue, as if the filmmakers suddenly decided they had shot enough footage and simply stopped there. A major disappointment. My strong recommendation is to save your popcorn, soda, and that cozy corner of your sofa for watching something else.
