Don't take it seriously and you'll have fun

I had a really fun time with this movie. The suspense works, the gore is satisfyingly bloody, and while the chimp looks very cheesy, that honestly adds to the charm rather than hurting it. At a tight 90-minute runtime, it doesn't waste time-things get intense fast, and once they do, the movie never lets up until the end. It's mean, messy, and fully commits to its ridiculous premise in the best way.

OK for a matinee or streaming

Saw "Primate" - it was the Cinemark $5 secret movie last night. In this one, it is "Cujo" except with a chimpanzee instead of a dog and with a larger cast. Cast includes Troy Kotsur from "Coda" and Johnny Sequoyah from "Dexter: New Blood". The chimp is a motion capture of Miguel Torres Umba ala Andy Serkis from LOTR. Anyway, the movie has a surfeit of gore for horror fans and there is truly suspenseful denouncement where Kotsur's deafness plays a role. There are of course some actions by the characters that defy common sense as well actions by the chimp that don't seem possible - but that is what "artistic license" is all about. The script is average, and the direction is competent but not extraordinary. I am not sure I would have paid full price for this one, but it is probably worth a matinee or better yet, wait for streaming. 6/10.

Primate goes Primal

This movie was exactly what I thought it would be. Don't expect an Oscar worthy performance from any of the actors. To be honest they dont matter as much as the primate. The movie follows a simple premise family ape gets rabies. The rest of the movie is about survival. Don't go in expecting a deep story and you'll enjoy it.Bonus points for having the Ape make ape sounds like planet of the Apes.
