A Powerful, Heart-wrenching Watch

A tough and important watch

It should be noted that this film isn't the first to document the real-life tragedy of Lai Hang and her son George Hang; the film Paper Tiger (2020) also is based on the same event. The film is carried by the two strong central performances from Liu and Shou, as well as the subject matter covered here. It can be a tough watch, seeing characters grieving and navigating through mental health crises and deteriorating. The display of the taboo of mental health in the Asian community in this film was refreshing to see and felt verisimilar. It was also nice to see the skittishness and gossipiness of suburbia. It rang true. While the son did have mental illness and did have a fixation on school shootings, ultimately we don't know that he ever would have done anything violent. That being said, while the film is pretty touching, it feels a tad superficial at points. The writing could have been fleshed out more to improve the film overall. A little more interiority for the characters would have made this better. Outside of the two leads, the rest of the characters feel one-dimensional and like plot devices. And adding some more detail to the father character would have made this better as well. There is a shocking scene involving the mother and son. I won't spoil it, but when you see the film you'll know what scene I'm referring to. And while it was unpredictable, it sort of came out of nowhere with no real buildup to it. Yes, this scene transpired in real life, and yes, this scene was necessary to include in the film because it's important to the real-life events; but in the film it feels tacked on because it comes out of the blue. This circles back to the writing, which can feel lacking.Nevertheless, I recommend this film. It's not anything amazing, and some viewers may find it dull to sit through. But this is a pretty good film that deftly covers the topic of mental health and how dire it can be in the US; and the performances are great.

I was paralyzed in my seat

I got to see this at the NH Film Festival and totally loved it and was an emotional wreck after finishing the film. The writing, and the acting by both Lucy Liu and newcomer Lawrence Shou, coupled with the masterful cinematography, made more a spellbinding experience that had me paralyzed in my seat and unable to move. The scenes where Joe would fall into his schizophrenic episodes were extremely intense and made me feel like I was right there experiencing it with him.Liu and Shou's chemistry on screen was so good that I had to remind myself that they are not mother and son. Both of their performances were incredible and I hope they get the recognition that they deserve.
