The killer reveal ruined this movie

the The ending lands with a dull echo rather than a scream

As the seventh entry in my all time favorite horror franchise, Scream 7 arrives with enormous expectations, and I approached it as a critic rather than a lifelong Ghostface loyalist. The film still delivers an experience worth watching, but it is far from untouchable. There is admiration here, but also frustration simmering beneath the surface.Seeing Neve Campbell return carries genuine weight. Knowing the reasoning behind her comeback adds emotional texture, and her presence immediately restores a sense of legacy. With Kevin Williamson back in a prominent creative position, there is an unmistakable attempt to channel the sharp, self aware energy that defined the earlier chapters. That nostalgic current runs strongly throughout. The incorporation of select legacy killers is one of the film's boldest swings. On paper, it is a clever reflection of modern horror culture and fan obsession. In execution, however, announcing those returns early works against the suspense. Instead of being immersed in the unfolding mystery, I found myself waiting for certain appearances rather than engaging with the present moment. The surprise factor suffers when anticipation becomes distraction. The cast is impressively stacked, and the kill sequences are among the most brutal and meticulously staged in the franchise. The opening is explosive and instantly gripping, one of the strongest starts in recent memory. Yet the pacing begins to sag as the body count rises rapidly, creating confusion rather than sustained tension. Nostalgia repeatedly injects excitement, but it cannot fully compensate for stretches that feel slow and oddly unfocused. There is also noticeable disservice done to several returning players, particularly one longstanding character who receives shockingly limited screen time. For a franchise built on legacy, that imbalance feels disappointing. When the story should be tightening its grip, it instead drifts, flirting with the kind of stagnation that once divided audiences during Scream 4.The most significant stumble arrives with the Ghostface reveal. Without spoiling specifics, it is easily the most underwhelming unmasking the series has delivered. The motive feels thin, almost bafflingly so, lacking the psychological punch expected from this saga. It is a good film overall, with strong performances and intense sequences, but the ending lands with a dull echo rather than a scream. Fans may accept it, not out of satisfaction, but out of hope that an eventual eighth installment will sharpen the blade once more.
