Shark mess, someone go fishing

Shark Girl is a film that had potential with its bizarre and unique premise-a girl mutated by nuclear waste into a half-shark, half-human creature-but ultimately fails to deliver on nearly every level. The concept alone could have been campy, thrilling, or even entertaining if executed properly. Unfortunately, the movie never finds its footing, and the story feels scattered and unfocused from start to finish. The screenplay jumps erratically between plot points, giving the impression that the writers were unsure how to handle the narrative, leaving viewers confused rather than invested. One of the biggest issues is the character development, or rather, the lack of it. The main character, the mutated girl, has little depth beyond her shark instincts, and the supporting characters are underdeveloped and one-dimensional. Even her best friend, who is supposed to investigate her condition and offer emotional grounding, feels like an afterthought. Without meaningful relationships or motivations, it becomes almost impossible to care about the characters' fates, which is a critical flaw for a horror or thriller film. The practical effects and CGI are another major problem. The girl's transformation, especially her teeth, is laughable rather than scary. The film attempts to present a sense of horror or suspense, but the execution is so poor that it undercuts any potential tension. Scenes meant to be shocking or suspenseful are unintentionally comedic because of the unrealistic appearance of the creature. This is especially detrimental given that creature features rely heavily on the believability of their monsters.Acting throughout the film is mostly subpar, with only the boy playing the love interest showing any real sense of credibility. The rest of the cast seems lost, delivering stiff, unnatural performances that make the dialogue feel even more awkward. It's clear that the director and casting team did not address these weaknesses during production. In a film that already struggles with story and effects, weak acting makes it nearly impossible to stay engaged. The direction itself does little to salvage the movie. Scenes are poorly staged, pacing is erratic, and transitions feel abrupt, preventing any sense of flow or atmosphere. There is no tension, no sense of dread, and no attempt to balance the absurdity of the premise with engaging storytelling. Instead, the movie comes across as a rushed, low-budget production that relies solely on the novelty of a human-shark hybrid rather than any real cinematic craft. In the end, Shark Girl is a film that fails on almost every front. The screenplay, direction, effects, and acting combine to create a movie that is nearly impossible to take seriously. Even fans of B-movie horror, who might appreciate campy concepts, will likely struggle to enjoy this film due to its lack of cohesion and engagement. It's a prime example of a film that had potential but was ruined by poor execution at every stage, leaving viewers with little more than frustration and disbelief.

Given the movie's title, I have to admit that I didn't exactly harbor the biggest of expectations to writers and directors Justin Shilton and Rob Zazzali's 2024 movie "Shark Girl". But given the fact that it was a movie that I had neither heard about or seen before, of course I opted to give the movie benefit of the doubt. The storyline in the movie, as written by Justin Shilton and Rob Zazzali, was pretty straightforward, but at the same time also very, very bad. A woman bitten by a shark that has been exposed to radioactive leakage, and now she is turning into a shark herself. Right, well at least it was so laughable that it was still watchable.I was not familiar with a single actress or actor on the cast list, except for Sumayyah Ameerah, which is something I do enjoy. There is something enjoyable about watching new and unfamiliar talents on the screen. The best performance in the movie was delivered by Sumayyah Ameerah, who played Sienna. The acting performance in "Shark Girl" were fair. The effects in "Shark Girl" are pretty low key. The movie doesn't really make use of an abundance of special effects. It was limited to the dentures that actress Alexandra Corin Johnston wore whenever the shark emerged within her.I will say that "Shark Girl" is watchable a single time, and that is all that the script has to it. But don't expect to be in for a stellar movie experience here.My rating of writers and directors Justin Shilton and Rob Zazzali's 2024 movie "Shark Girl" lands on a most generous three out of ten stars.
