Plot summary

Darwin, a senior photographer who consistently uses a manual camera, is shocked to discover the appearance of a woman's shadow in every photo he takes. Soon, the woman's figure appears in real life, terrorizing him. Pia, Darwin's girlfriend, decides to investigate the woman's identity. It turns out the woman is Lilies, an outstanding student who once studied at their university. When Darwin's friends die one by one, Pia is convinced this is related to a 'sin' Darwin committed in the past.

Unnecessary remake

Some of the worst in CGI, awful

Shutter is one of those horror films I went into expecting something genuinely chilling and emotionally unsettling. Foreign horror often carries that reputation for slow burning dread and psychological weight, so I was ready for something that would crawl under my skin and stay there. Instead, what I got felt surprisingly hollow, almost like the film kept promising depth but never actually delivering on it.The biggest issue for me was how disconnected everything felt. Scenes would build toward what seemed like meaningful revelations, only to spiral into moments that felt exaggerated or unintentionally ridiculous. Rather than creating fear, those choices pulled me out of the experience. The story itself started to feel artificial, like it was trying very hard to convince me of something that was never fully formed. The screenplay didn't help matters. It felt uneven and overly dramatic in places where subtlety would have been far more effective. There were clear attempts to construct emotional stakes and mystery, but they never quite locked into place. Instead of tension tightening as the film progressed, it felt like the narrative was stretching thin, reaching for impact that just wasn't there.Visually, some of the effects also weakened the atmosphere. Moments that were clearly meant to shock or disturb ended up feeling less convincing because of distracting CGI. In horror, believability is everything. Once that illusion cracks, the fear fades quickly, and that happened here more than once. The performances and casting felt limited as well. While no one was outright terrible, the characters lacked dimension. I never felt deeply connected to their struggles, which made the escalating events feel distant rather than personal. Horror thrives on emotional investment, and without that anchor, even the most dramatic reveals can fall flat.Ultimately, the direction felt unfocused. Instead of guiding the audience into a cohesive emotional descent, it felt like the film was slowly collapsing under its own ambition. I wanted to appreciate it, especially given its reputation, but the experience never truly came together for me. It's a film I can't confidently recommend, simply because the fear it aims for never fully materializes.

Good remake

One of the successful remakes of Thai horror films, even though many people think this film feels lame, the musical and visual aspects are very good. The story part is also neater, It's been tidied up from the original film. But overall, the message it's trying to convey is well conveyed, and the execution of the ending shot has been slightly changed.
