Plot summary

Sixth film in the series. A little boy who just wants to be a carpenter is at the center of a plot that might topple -- or save -- a mighty Clan, and while the swords of some angry samurai may not cause Kyoshiro much trouble, the deadly wiles of two women may be more difficult to survive!

Kyoshiro Nemuri braves clan politics to save an orphaned boy

SWORD OF Satan (1965) was the 6th film in the "Sleepy Eyes of Death" series for star Raizo Ichikawa, who played a "rogue swordsman" named Kyoshiro Nemuri, the red-haired illegitimate son of a European missionary and a Japanese courtesan. Nemuri wandered the Japanese countryside, much like his blind contemporary Zatoichi, and got mixed up in other people's troubles while fending off plenty of his own. Here, he offers harsh words to a woman from a samurai family seeking money by selling him her body for the night and when she kills herself the next morning he takes the blame and offers to look out for the woman's young son, Tsurumatsu, who becomes the pawn in the internal politics of the region's Iwashiro Clan. Without the boy as heir to the title of Lord, the clan is likely to be dissolved by the Shogunate. When the boy declares he'd rather grow up to be a carpenter like his maternal grandfather, Nemuri decides to take a stand and protect the boy from the Iwashiro clansmen's efforts to abduct him. Even though Nemuri was supposed to be much more cold-blooded than, say, Zatoichi or Ogami Itto (LONE WOLF AND CUB), he seems to be cut from the same moral cloth as those two heroes as he risks his life here for an unselfish cause.Complicating matters is the fact that Orin, a woman with a lethal command of throwing weapons, is out to kill Nemuri to avenge a past wrong and decides to join up with the Iwashiro men to undermine Nemuri's efforts to hide the boy and spirit him to a stable home somewhere. The Iwashiro men are no match for Nemuri's swordplay skills and his deadly "Full Moon Cut," so they recruit the finest swordsman from an allied clan to help their cause. There are plenty of sword battles along the way, usually pitting Nemuri against vastly superior numbers of opponents. At one point, he even breaks up a black mass being conducted by a priest with a sideline in abortions.The plot is rather standard for this kind of film and not all that dissimilar from a typical Zatoichi plot of the era. It's paced well and keeps us engrossed throughout a tidy 75-minute running time. The action is entertaining if a bit far-fetched at times, as in a scene where Nemuri is tied up but still manages to fight off a band of swordsmen and get himself freed through a highly implausible maneuver. The naturally intense Ichikawa (THE LOYAL 47 RONIN, 1958 version) brings a melancholic undertone to the role of Nemuri and plays him as someone keenly aware of his "bad karma" and fully accepting of whatever fate delivers to him, although he's quick to put up a fight when he can. The duplicitous Orin (Michiko Saga) has the largest role among the women in the film and even though she's nominally a villain and out to kill him, Nemuri recognizes a certain level of deep understanding between them. This isn't the best samurai film I've ever seen, but it's certainly an enjoyable one.Director Kimiyoshi Yasuda also directed other Sleepy Eyes of Death films as well as some of the better Zatoichi films (e.g., ZATOICHI MEETS THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN) and the classic period monster film, DAIMAJIN (1966).

Solid Entry with a Few Surprises

Sword of Satan improves on the last entry with lots of action and a story with more surprises than usual. The film opens with an atmospheric scene which hooks the viewer. Leaving a tavern one dark foggy night, Kyoshiro Nemuri is approached by a woman in a noh mask who begs him to purchase her for the night. Nemuri at first accepts, but when he gets her home, the woman's mask and cultured background annoys Nemuri. He insults her and leaves. When, the woman kills herself, Nemuri feels a rare bout of guilt. The woman had a boy charge, the illegitimate son of a clan leader. The clan originally tried to kill the boy to protect the heir apparent, but now that both of the other heirs have died, the clan must have the boy or be dissolved. The cynicism of the action disgusts the usually cynical Nemuri, who vows to do only what is the best for the boy. In addition there is a female assassin who wants Nemuri dead for killing her brother (in the third film). Along the way in achieving happiness for the boy, Nemuri kills about three dozen people, breaks up an illegal abortion racket, and interrupts a black mass. Director Kimiyoshi Yasuda, who directed the third entry in the series Full Circle Killing, stages the action with a sure hand. The battle at the black mass re-uses the P.O.V. action style that Yasuda had used in the fight on the steps in the third film, yet the effect plays better here. In addition, the action is more plentiful and violent than in the last entry, with a rousing finale at a temple. Finally, this entry brings back the trippy effect of Nemuri's sword seeming to leave a trail of light when he does the Full Moon Cut, which was missing from the last entry. Sword of Satan is an all around appealing and exciting entry in the Sleepy Eyes of Death series. It is not the best one thus far (that is easily the fourth entry), but solid chanbara entertainment.
