When Rich people steal the Poor, this is business, but when the Poor people defend themselves, this is violence.

I guess that in a few months or years - it has actually already begun - the US film industry will produce films like this one. Not French, because film companies are too much government boot lickers, not brave, bold enough to take risks. I won't get further in my explanations, you have understood what I mean. This drama, thriller drama is just the reflection of the Brazilian society. As Mark Twain said: "When Rich steal the Poors, this is business, but when Poor defend themselves, this is violence." Not for the sissies. Not hopeful picture of the modern society.

I have a problem with this film

"State of Fear" is a film difficult to rate, mainly because the script for it was written by some donkey.I'm not kidding - this movie is made correctly, a bit chaotically edited, but from the technical point of view it's fine. Only this story is so absurd and exaggerated that somewhere in the middle of the film you don't even wonder if it all makes sense, because it probably doesn't. The characters are written to do the stupidest things they can think of. The police consider themselves to be underfunded good people, gang members to be defenders of the weak, and the government is simply corrupt - and everyone behaves like bandits anyway, but considers themselves the good guys. I understand that it's Brazil, but it's pity - I guess it can be told better? And so for over an hour you watch action scenes that are unrelated to each other. From explosion to explosion. ZERO building a background for the characters and events that are happening in this film. You have to believe that what these characters do makes sense and is justified in some way. With all this, I still had the impression that I was watching some fan remake of "City of God", especially when the phenomenal Seu Jorge appears in both films. The difference, however, is that "City of God" is probably the best Brazilian film in history, and this one is absurdly mediocre. Normally I would give it a 4/10 because it's a movie where things just happen and you're supposed to believe that it all makes sense, but I really like the cinematography and some of the action scenes, so it got a 5/10 from me. This is a film that no one will remember in two weeks. If someone really wants to see it, go ahead. However, if someone is looking for a good film, I recommend looking for something else, such as the aforementioned "City of God", which is a gem of Brazilian cinema. In the end - I've never been to Sao Paulo, but the stereotypical way this city is portrayed, where there are simply only thieves and murderers (only one wears a uniform, and the others are in a cartel) allows me to assume that the screenwriter has also never been to Sao Paulo, because this city is painted as the worst place to live, where explosions and shootings are practically in the city center and no one is surprised. I understand that there is crime somewhere on the outskirts of the city, but why does the whole city look like one big ghetto? Is that really what it was about?

Post production ruined this film

State of Fear looked like it had potential on the surface. It gained noticeable traction on streaming platforms, and from the outside it felt like one of those thrillers that might quietly surprise people. Unfortunately, the final product is a complete letdown. What starts as something that could have been tense and engaging quickly becomes frustrating and difficult to sit through. The biggest issue is the screenplay. The story feels scattered and underdeveloped, as if it never fully commits to its own premise. Instead of building suspense or emotional investment, the narrative drifts from moment to moment without creating meaningful stakes. Key plot points lack proper setup, and character motivations feel thin. There is no strong momentum driving the film forward, which makes the experience feel longer than it actually is. At times, it genuinely feels more tempting to skip ahead than to stay engaged, which is never a good sign. However, the most damaging flaw is technical rather than narrative. The dubbing and subtitle synchronization are painfully off. The lips of the actors do not match the spoken dialogue, and the subtitles feel disconnected from the rhythm of the scenes. This constant mismatch becomes incredibly distracting, pulling you out of any immersion the film tries to create. Instead of focusing on the tension or the performances, you are stuck noticing how poorly aligned everything feels. This is not an acting issue. The actors are doing what they can with the material. The real problem lies in editing and post-production, which severely undermines the entire viewing experience.Even if those technical issues had been handled properly, the film still lacks the depth and originality needed to make it memorable. The premise never fully evolves into something compelling, and the emotional beats fail to resonate. It feels like a missed opportunity from start to finish. While streaming buzz may temporarily push it into visibility, State of Fear ultimately feels like one of those titles that disappears quickly, leaving little impact and even less reason to revisit it.
