Aka. Breakdown Forest

To my own surprise, Breakdown Forest turned out to be a relatively trashy yet quite entertaining German action film. The basic concept is anything but original: a kind of human hunt in which poor criminals are used as prey for the rich. This premise is familiar from many other films, including John Woo's Hard Target and Battle Royale etc. So originality on a story level is not to be expected.And yet, in a strange way, the film is fun. This is mainly due to the solid action and the presence of some formerly or relatively well-known German actors, who give the film a certain genre appeal. In terms of action, the movie is surprisingly effective: the shootouts are well staged, tightly edited, and pleasantly old-school. Bullet impacts & blood packs feel practical and handmade.Visually and sonically, there is little to complain about. The film was clearly shot in real forest locations, without green-screen backgrounds, which gives it a raw and direct atmosphere reminiscent of classic action films.However, the film has clear weaknesses. Breakdown Forest feels much longer than it actually is. A tighter edit and shorter runtime would have improved it significantly. The dialogue-typical of German cinema-is largely uninspired and mostly functional. At the same time, the film's social criticism and exaggeration are often very trashy and deliberately over-the-top.The dry, sometimes crude humor is also notable. Many of the lines and statements feel shockingly politically incorrect by today's standards-something that would be hard to imagine in a contemporary German film. Yet this very aspect also gives the movie a certain boldness and edge.In the end, Breakdown Forest is a recommendation mainly for genre fans. For a mainstream audience, it is likely too rough, too trashy, and too drawn out. For me, it falls somewhere between average and below average overall, but it surprised me with its bloody, visceral action. For a German film, it is genuinely daring-and for that reason alone, worth a look.

Tal der Skorpione

Interesting that the movie formerly known as Valley of the Scorpions, has a new title now. Maybe the marketing department thought this would be a good idea. I reckon it does sound better in English though.

The story itself is nothing new, quite the opposite. You get groups of people who have to eliminate each other. If you know German actors, you may recognize quite a few of them. They play different characters, which boils down to being a teenage boys wet dream. Not every teenage boy that is - and certainly some girls and others who will like this too.

Some nice effects and quite a bit of action round the whole thing up. If you are not easily offended, the movie might work for you ... just lower your expectations ... a lot.
