A good role for--and solid performance from--Kim Basinger

Kim Basinger gives a solid performance playing American business director working in Germany determined to have a baby, this despite several miscarriages over the past 10 years which has left her husband feeling defeated. She hears about babies being sold on the black market near the border of the Czech Republic and drives out that way, picking up a self-described "junkie dwarf" on her journey. The relationship that develops between these two is unusual and interesting--and the pace certainly picks up from the deadly-slow opener. Unfortunately, writer-director Anders Morgenthaler is going for Cinematic Greatness here, which means deep dramatic meanings in the narrative, all of which throw the movie off-course. Kim and her friend (well-played by Jordan Prentice) take off with an infant being kept in a cupboard by his prostitute-mother, but the hooker and her pimp catch up to Basinger's car and kidnap them. I imagine most audiences will stick with the movie until the end, but the final events--a murder, a rape, some kind of explosion and, finally, a "miracle"-- are scattered and unsatisfying. I also could have done without Morgenthaler's artistic overlay, which is just showing-off, and the child's voice inside Basinger's head which acts like a guardian angel (and at one point prays to God for her). Despite its flaws, "The 11th Hour" does have an intriguing story, and its stronger moments stay in the memory. **1/2 from ****

A film not for everyone

Great film. Magnificint acting by the two l ad characters..Kim basinger as Maria, and the character of Christian...both missing something in life,,both gatherd by fate and desperation, This thriller drama of European style... has many levels of meanings..not just the course of action on the surface...it has symbolism that's concluded at the very end of the film.... and the message is clear....i enjoyed it a lot...and i wonder why did it receive such a low rate...this film deserves 8 at least for the acting and the message behind it...artistic Well done..recommended
