Plot summary

...The Devil Gets His Dues.

Part II picks up after the murder of Oiwa and Kohei.Which is where the traditional tale normally takes a supernatural turn.Kinoshita, however, has opted to subdue this aspect of the story.Instead choosing to have things play out in more of a psychological manner.As the burden of his actions starts to take a toll on Tamiya.And karma starts to catch up with Naosuke.The supernatural element is still there.It's just subtle.With her twin sister taking on the form of the apparition, in this case.So...it's not really the typical kind of ghost story you might expect.But, it's almost as if the ghost of Oiwa is manipulating events from beyond the grave, so as to bring forth justice for her murder.Ultimately leading to the fiery conclusion of the film.Being a contemporary of filmmakers like Kurosawa, Ozu and Mizoguchi must not have been easy...but Kinoshita certainly managed to established himself among the upper echelons of Japanese filmmakers with this excellent film.Even if he was a bit underrated in their wake.7.5 out of 10.

If You've Made It This Far...

THis is the second half of a two-part movie. It follows THE YOTSUDA PHANTOM. Ronin Ken Uehara and gangster Osamu Takizawa, have just killed Kinuyo Tanaka in a horrifying fashion, and gotten rid of a witness or two. They've sunk the bodies..... but apparently the lady's spirit haunts her sister (also played by Miss Tanaka) and Uehara. The murderers' plans gradually disintegrate under a a police investigation and Uehara's apparent insanity. Will Takizawa wind up killing everyone?It's based on a play by Nanboku Tsuruya (1759-1829), a kabuki playwright given to supernatural and macabre themes. This was turned into a movie several times, beginning with a silent version in 1925. Although director Keisuke Kinoshita did not write the screenplay, he had a fondness for kabuki, and made a couple of other movies that show the form's influence, particularly THE BALLAD OF NARAYAMA; the strong moral components and violent themes seem to have resonated with him.
