A brilliant movie but you have to know, what you're getting yourself into

Danish dark comedy can be quite grotesque. If you're not familiar with, or a fan of Anders Thomas Jensen's other work, there's a good chance that you're going to find this movie unpleasantly bizarre. If you are a fan of Anders Thomas Jensen, however, I am pleased to tell you that this is one of his best movies yet.

An Ambitious Film in Search of Its Own Identity

"The Last Viking" is an ambitious but uneven film that ultimately struggles to define its own identity. It oscillates between black comedy, psychological drama, thriller, absurdist cinema, and moments that verge on splatter, without ever committing fully to any of these modes. Rather than creating productive tension between genres, the film often feels uncertain of its own direction. The stylistic confusion suggests a desire to echo a wide range of cinematic influences. At different moments, "The Last Viking" appears to reach for the emotional intimacy of "Rain Man," the provocative absurdity of Lars von Trier's "The Idiots," the physical drama of "Mystic River," or even the sentimental irony of "The Intouchables". Yet these references remain more aspirational than integrated, resulting in a narrative that feels torn rather than layered. The performances are uniformly strong on a technical level, and the cast clearly commits to the material. However, the shifting tone makes it difficult for the actors to settle into a consistent register. As a result, individual performances sometimes feel at odds with one another, each calibrated to a slightly different version of the film.In the end, "The Last Viking" leaves a peculiar and unsettling aftertaste - not in a deliberately challenging or provocative way, but in a manner that feels uncanny and strangely disconnected.

One of the best movies of 2025!

This movie delves into the deep scars of childhood and how they shape us for life, and the search for identitity, balancing pain with just the right amount of humour. Beautifully written and wonderful acting, that had us crying and laughing all at the same time. Finally a movie that really makes you "feel" something inside.
