It's actually not that bad

The Mother, the Menace and Me is an interesting, if uneven, film that never fully rises above its limitations but remains oddly engaging. It isn't particularly memorable or technically impressive, yet it has just enough charm and self-awareness to hold your attention. The film leans heavily into its corniness, and while that won't work for everyone, it does give the story a sense of personality. At its core, the film follows a struggling screenwriter-director trying to make it big, losing everything along the way, and slowly working his way back up. It's a familiar arc, but one that's handled with enough sincerity to make it enjoyable. The dynamics between the characters are playful and exaggerated, reinforcing the film's light, almost goofy tone. It's not deep storytelling, but it's functional for what the movie is trying to be.The screenplay is clearly the weakest element. It lacks polish and consistency, often feeling underwritten or repetitive. That said, the film still manages to stay entertaining simply because it commits to its absurdity. Even when the writing falters, the energy keeps it moving, making it easy enough to stay invested. The characters themselves are a mixed bag. They're exaggerated, ridiculous, and frequently over-the-top, but that seems intentional. The film embraces its silliness rather than fighting it, and there's a certain fun in watching the chaos unfold, even when it borders on stupidity.Ultimately, The Mother, the Menace and Me isn't a great movie, and it's not one that's likely to stick with you long after it ends. Still, it offers something different. Its B-movie, independent-film feel gives it a scrappy charm that separates it from more polished, A-list productions. While it's far from essential viewing, it's worth checking out if you're in the mood for something light, offbeat, and casually entertaining.

Leah Remini & Lorraine Bracco are hilarious in this wildly entertaining movie

Leah Remini and Lorraine Bracco are hilarious in this romantic comedy slash horror spoof that anyone with a dream-chasing (and maybe delusional) loved one will instantly relate. Bracco masterfully balances tough love with exasperation, reminding us why she's an icon, while Remini's Hollywood know-it-all steals every scene with razor-sharp wit and hilariously over-the-top industry jargon. James Austin Kerr delivers a breakout performance as the ever-optimistic dreamer, while Christine Spang is pitch-perfect as his wife, desperately trying to keep their family-and her sanity-intact while the chaos unfolds. This sharp, self-aware film blends horror tropes with family dysfunction, making for a wildly entertaining ride.

Too Pleasant for a horror comedy , but not boring

The directing, production, lighting & all other technical elements of this film are 'good'.The acting is good also- in a slightly melodramatic 'comedy' way, that alternates between dry & slapstick, but not outright farce. Its a whimsical look at super low budget film making, financing & promotion- with some horror/comedy moments, but is slightly more concerned with the strains in relationship such obsessive indulgence entails & manifests... it's ok & enjoyable enough to give it a watch, but its not HILARIOUS, nor OTT gore orientated... I'd say its a PG (or 12) cert in that regard.Compared with say BOWFINGER its not in the same league at all, so the high ratings on it are disproportional & obviously from vested interests- which is a pity as it is a good enough film , but such HYPE tends to build resentment, not compassion for it.The real disadvantage is the script is only ok, the witting is good enough for what it is; & what to achieve , but the story is too slight, too shallow, to cliched in too many ways. The actors are all good enough, that with a better script/story something exceptional could have been done with this.It also wasn't a small, micro budget crew that filmed it, so there's a certain irony in its low budget focus... & the ''film-within the film'' they make could never have been made with only the crew shown. There are deeper issues though. WTF is it about film makers and their obsessive use of pathetically hen-pecked & awkward male leads? The 'Norman Wisdom bumbling idiot characters' & smug nerds get excessive exposure, while now-a-days always in servitude to conceited women. In this (as usual) the wife has no apparent friends at all, while the main character seems to only have 1 & a half (both in his film). The actual portrayal of film making & its travails are also too one-dimensional & cliched to be notable. The kills are not imaginative at all considering the history of the genre. So much potential was missed. It may have been a better film if the DOCTOR who acts for him had been the main focus of the move- her character had a load of potential they sadly avoided. The same under developed & rather bland 'alter ego grim reaper' is also 'under exploited', so ends up rather tepid, instead of suspenseful.I'd rate this a 6/10 relative to other films, & a 7/10 if you love films about film making. There are some fine moments I haven't mentioned so as not to spoil them- such as the 'managers, agents, & TV execsWell made, passes the time, but not a 10/10 !!!
