A Great Revival With The Classic Muppet Feel

A silly vaudeville with Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang and a few human stars playing along; a simple formula and here it's brought back with perfect timing. Sabrina Carpenter reminds me slightly of a young Dolly Parton gamely smashing bottles on drunk muppets and duetting with Kermit on a Rainbow Connection-like rowboat, Piggy is at her haughty finest and the goofy supporting cast all fill their recognizable spots. This was a great childhood bulwark of weekly tv and hopefully will find a permanent spot in a twenty-first century already as overcrowded as their backstage dressing room with entertainment options. After all It's the Muppet Show tonight!

A 30 minute stupid grin

With these sort of things nostalgia and rose tinted memories can distort the quality of shows and films we saw as a kid. The Muppets have never suffered from this though. They really always have been great. And to my great relief this hold true to that maxim.They're still zany, still surreal, still hilarious, still sweet and cozy, still absolutely adorable. Rogen has done a brilliant job taking an if it's not broke approach (a great Statler and Waldorf joke here, the two old curmudgeons back on top form here). Why change a winning formula? This is basically exactly what you got back in the 70s. Take a big star, and what an inspired choice Sabrina Carpenter is, stick them on stage with this crazy bunch and let them have fun. She does and they do and it's all lovely. If the rest of the shows are just this on repeat then count me in. It left me with a huge grin for 30 minutes. More of this please.
