A film about parental responsibility

El Castigo is not a conventional thriller but a tense, minimalist psychological drama told in a single unbroken take. What begins as a desperate situation following a misguided act of discipline gradually turns into a painful examination of a couple's relationship and their sense of responsibility as parents.Matías Bize's direction is restrained and focused, using the one-shot structure to increase pressure rather than to show off. The tension grows through dialogue, silences, and small, telling gestures instead of dramatic outbursts or manipulative twists. Antonia Zegers and Néstor Cantillana deliver subtle, grounded performances that make it difficult to place clear blame on either character.El Castigo sticks with you not because of shock, but because of the uncomfortable questions it raises about parenting.

The other side of motherhood

A couple suddenly stops their car by a road through the woods, apparently looking for their son who's been left there a couple of minutes before. They shout his name but he wouldn't turn up.With very few.ornaments, scenery and cast, the film simmers all along as minutes keep passing by. Just the two main characters in a tense wait that pushes things up into the surface, little by little, while the mother, unravels the mixed motherly feelings and contradictions which are rarely allowed to come up to the surface (so as to avoid being considered a monster, by definition of mother as we know it).Intense, moving and thought provoking.
