Krimi-essentials

To the person(s) who almost immediately rates my user-comments as "non-useful" as soon as they are published: why? Are you so sad and miserable that only diminishing the work of others brings you joy? Try contributing something yourself, first.Meanwhile, I've watched enough German "Krimi" thrillers based on the work of Edgar Wallace, to know which are the good ones and which are the bad ones. "Der Rote Kreis" is a good one! The story is hectic, confusing and completely incoherent, but - guess what - it doesn't matter! As long as the film rages on at a high pace, the story makes sense, even with all the abrupt plot twists and new characters that are introduced every couple of minutes. As soon as the film is over, you have forgotten most of it, but that's actually not so bad.Two or three days after I watched "Der Rote Kreis" I can only explain the story in broad strokes. That's okay, though, as I just remember that it was fun and entertaining. Scotland Yard hunts for a murderer who sends three threatening letters to his victims before killing them. The experienced but somewhat older and almost jaded inspector of Scotland Yard is under high pressure because the case is not easily resolved, and he gets help from the ambitious and much younger Derrick Yale. Since this was one of the first Krimi film adaptations (the series ran from 1959 to 1972, and "Der Rote Kreis" is from 1960), there luckily isn't a lot of slapstick humor yet, and that is a major advantage. The dumb and childish humor bothered me tremendously in several of the Krimis that came out later. Usually, the (attempted) humor comes from the characters that Eddi Arent portrays. Here, his Sgt. Haggett character is one of the more light-hearted aspects, but it's not exaggeratedly bothersome. The denouement is fairly predictable, but - again - that may also be because I have seen a lot of this kind of Krimis and Gialli.

Typical krimi

THE RED CIRCLE is another early German krimi outing based on the writings of Edgar Wallace. This one's typical of its kind, involving a historical jailbreak, a kidnapping sub-plot, and a mysterious killer known only as...you guessed it, the Red Circle. It all ties together quite nicely come the end, although early on it's a little confusing with the disparate plot elements and the like; I even found my attention wandering as I threatened to nod off during these early stages. However, the second half is a lot better as the plot coalesces into consistency, some humorous character work pays off, and the climax is a satisfying one.
