Not the Film It Thinks It Is

The Rip has the bones of an interesting story, but it's directed with the finesse of someone trying to paint while wearing oven gloves. There are flashes of potential in the premise and a few moments that hint at what the film could have been, but they're buried under clumsy pacing, awkward staging, and baffling creative choices. It's especially frustrating given the quality of the cast, who clearly have the talent to deliver something far better than what ends up on screen. The action sequences are where the film really falls apart. Characters routinely behave in ways that defy basic logic and self-preservation, moving through dangerous situations with a level of casual confidence that completely drains the tension from the scene. Instead of feeling grounded or suspenseful, these moments come across as artificial and oddly detached from reality, making it hard to stay invested in what's happening. In the end, The Rip feels like a wasted opportunity. With a stronger hand at the helm, it could have been something genuinely engaging. Instead, it settles for being merely disappointing, squandering both its concept and its cast on a final product that never lives up to its promise.

Solid and stylish thriller

I almost didn't want to watch this picture, sure Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have some great collaborative pictures together, but I'm not wholly impressed by some of the trash Netflix originals throw out. So to my surprise, I was really entertained by this neat little thriller. It doesn't come out as either Damon's or even Afflecks best work, but the two stars both come out with their heads held high. It did take me a good half hour to get fully invested in this picture as it started like almost all generic heist movies. But writer and director Joe Carnahan (whom you may be familiar of from Smokin' Aces) drops enough twists and turns to keep this movie rolling.Truth be told, I had little to no idea in which direction this story was heading, but it is simple enough to follow, and when the twist is finally revealed it does tie the pieces together by brilliantly. It is one of those thrillers where your brain does need to be dialed back somewhat, as there were scenes which I felt were unnecessarily implausible, but as far as Thrillers go, it may not square up with the best of them, but it's a well executed and enjoyable flick.Damon is great, his character kept me guessing throughout, and I think to his credit Affleck delivers his finest performance since 'The Town'. I doubt it's going to bring in a whole lot of money or stay in the charts for long, it's geared to a more masculine audience but it's another well written and performed collaboration from Damon and Affleck, and I think fans of dark and gritty crime flicks, like myself, will be pleased with the finished product.Recommend.

Worth a 100 million?

Nothing wrong with this one. Decent movie with a advanced camera work and a decent plot. Nobody is doing anything particularly interesting nor is it very dull. But the budget is reported at 100 Million! But for what? These action flicks were done for 10 million a decade ago and now budgets exploding but the quality of the product is not. Not sure that is sustainable. Good news: at least one decent movie Netflix has been releasing recently!
