Plot summary

Documentary-maker David Malone delves into the secrets of ocean waves. In an elegant and original film, he finds that waves are not made of water, that some waves travel sideways and that the sound of the ocean comes not from water but from bubbles. Waves are not only beautiful but also profoundly important, and there is a surprising connection between the life cycle of waves and the life of human beings.

Fascinating and moving documentary

Although it came out in 2011, I only just discovered this gem on BBC Four. David Malone interviews scientists, experts, poets and philosophers about the remarkable phenomenon of waves and how they represent the transference and transcendence of energy. An extremely interesting subject presented and explored in a really genuine humanistic way with a wonderful, cathartic ending.To respond to the previous reviewer, you're obviously perfectly entitled to your opinion and I will definitely check out the other documentary you mentioned. However it's a shame that you seem more concerned about what people look like rather than the substance of what they're saying.

Interesting Subject but very old fashioned in style

Very Very interesting and nicely presented, BUT, I had to double-check the year this was made - 2011. Every single person in this is a white middle class male. There is absolutely no excuse for this, and is off-putting to the point of distraction. It's not even as if there aren't any female experts in this field. Try watching Physicist and Oceanographer Helen Czerski's excellent Pop! The Science of Bubbles from just 2 years later - 2013.With your eyes closed, and ignoring the modern music this could be an Open University broadcast from the 1970's - bring on the flares, beards and kipper ties!
