A battle against intolerance

A film that breathes poetry, with a slow pace that may not appeal to everyone, cinematography full of beauty and contemplation. An ode to the unfortunate in life who recognise themselves in their anguish and helplessness, but who also have the right to live and be happy in their own way. Valter Hugo Mãe's book thrives on this slowness, on the enjoyment of its poetic phrases, and this reality is not easy to transpose to the screen. For those who have read the book, it is very curious to see their imagination visually captured, for others, perhaps the interpretation of the film is more complex. But in this world where intolerance is gaining more and more ground, it is very pleasant to see a film where the message is the opposite, it is a hymn to tolerance and humanity. Definitely worth seeing.

Society of the Invisible

I'm quite fascinated by the pagan relationship we Brazilians have with death and the sea; this film captures that fascination with death and the power of water that I notice in our culture very well, without fear of its witchy nuances.A beautiful, rich story of the fantastic and courageous embrace of the wonder that is human complexity, the elements that touch all people as both lovable and hateful, and how this inner fire is fueled.Beyond norms and rules, we share a unique wonder that is planet Earth with so many others, some worse, some better, all within their own world, worlds that always seem quite separate but which are connected by where we come from, our pain, or our history. In a natural history, Rezende captures the genuineness of humanity. We are billions, mostly made up of invisible people who live on the margins of society.

The Son of a Thousand Men emerges as one of the most remarkable Brazilian films of 2025 and one of Netflix's major recent releases. Daniel Rezende, who directs and adapts Valter Hugo Mãe's book, delivers a film that reaffirms the special moment that Brazilian cinema is experiencing. The production combines emotional depth, sensitive performances, and a narrative structure that breaks with tradition, focusing more on experience and sensation than on direct explanation. It is a film that embraces the audience through silence, contemplation, and an attentive gaze on the pains and affections of its characters. The Son of a Thousand Men delivers a story of unity that is not based on idealizations, but on the construction of unlikely bonds between people who, until recently, believed they had no place in the world.Daniel Rezende delivers a film that stands out for its courage in escaping the conventional. It is not just a story about fatherhood, but about family in its broadest and most affective sense. About welcoming and being welcomed. About allowing yourself to love and be loved. With a narrative constructed like an emotional puzzle and a set of remarkable performances, The Son of a Thousand Men consolidates itself as one of the great Brazilian productions of the year, and certainly one of the most exciting ever delivered by Netflix. It is a film that resembles the style of A24: intimate, sensory, human, but with the heart and identity of Brazil pulsing in every scene. A work that stays with the viewer long after it ends.
