Plot summary

Tony Roper wrote 'The Steamie' for Glasgow's Mayfest in 1987. Return to Hogmany 1957 when a fiesty group of Glasgow women; Mrs Culfeathers, Dolly, Doreen and the irrepressible Magrit, all meet at The Steamie to do the traditional family wash before the New Year. The Steamie is a hilarious cameo of Glasgow's social history where the washing was always easier to do when the Women shared their laugher and sorrow and a scandalous supply of gossip. This is the definitive version of the most popular play of the last 20 years with the all star cast of Dorothy Paul as Magrit, Eileen McCallum as Dolly, Kate Murphy as Doreen, Sheila McDonald as Mrs Culfeathers and a very young Peter Mullan as Andy, the whisky loving handy man.

The Steamie

Based on a play written by Tony roper who is better known as Jamesie in Rab C Nesbitt. The Steamie is a Glasgow wash house where women come to wash their clothes and gossip.Set in New Year's Eve in 1950. This dramatisation centres on four women of various ages.Doreen loves the movies and dreams of falling in love with a film star.Mrs Culfeathers the oldest of the women is sad that she has never met her great grandchildren. The dialect is hard Scots and reflects the working class Glaswegian life of the women. That includes hard drinking husbands. This is a bittersweet comedy with lots of pathos. One of the characters describing her life as a woman is very poignant.Unfortunately this television presentation is very stagebound. Only opening up for the screen for the musical numbers or the reverie sequences. It could also had been made shorter, although I understands the stage play is longer.
