What Walt's Watching

I know what I do as a prolific reviewer for a few online websites is just my humble opinion at the end of the day, but I always pride myself on writing honest reviews with no bias (or BS).I'm not going to sugar coat my take on what I've seen.To this end I must say I was slightly disappointed with one of my favourite Australian directors latest project: "The Travellers" (rated M).Bruce Beresford is an iconic genius of film since his early outrageous days with "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie" starring old mate Barry Crocker to "Don's Party", "Puberty Blues", "Breaker Morant", "Driving Miss Daisy" and more recently "Ladies In Black" which I gave a solid 8/10 rating in 2018.Filmed in WA, "The Travellers" has a very amateurish vibe in production, script and even some casting. This is not top shelf Bruce at his best at 85.It deals with some very sensitive topics like dementia, ageing, death and infidelity and misses the mark too often with no consequences.Luke Bracey ("Mercy Road") as the hot shot Waspish, slightly effeminate, Opera Theatre Set Designer/Artist son "Stephen Seary" (not Steve), who's living abroad until his mothers illness drags him screaming and kicking back to his roots (literally), is so self absorbed he can't keep it in his pants and flits from one woman's bed to the next whilst being in a long term relationship with an Irish Cellist back in UK without any guilt or conscience. His acting is a weak link too and not as gritty as his on screen family.Face time with his girlfriend and business associates looks incredibly fake.Surely by 2025 we've got the technology to make this IT look genuine, not faker than a two bob watch.Thank goodness for the legend that is Bryan Brown "Fred" his dad and Susie Porter "Nikki" as the sister/daughter in this fluid family dynamic.Brown could make the alphabet entertaining viewing.Porter's screen time is too brief, not giving her the chance to really show us what she's capable of.Together they deliver some of the best lines from an otherwise sub par script from Bruce.Listen out for: Bryan's grandad joke about Elephants.Watch out for: a staging of La Traviata in Germany...apparently! Plus a small role for Nicholas Hammond ("The Sound of Music"), now an Australian resident.Even Tim Finn's songs couldn't save this films abstruce soundtrack."The Travellers" was shot in various locations in Western Australia including, The Castle Hotel, Swan, Woodbridge House, Woodbridge, York, Fremantle and Perth. Some of the small towns were fictional to protect the innocent. The movie does have an Aussie sense of laconic, dry outback humour that on occasion saves it from being a waste of over 90 minutes of your life. One example is when "Stevens" Aunty is described by his sister as "an equal opportunity racist" after a hilariously awkward conversation. She reminded me of some of the insensitive things my own mother says.Having said this I would watch "The Travellers" again when it streams, because there are some good moments, but it's just NOT in the same league as Beresford's amazing body of work. He's probably damned himself by setting the bar so high in the past.I was honestly impressed that a popular cinema chain had the fortitude to give this movie some sessions and I didn't have make the trip to an independent in Brisbane. It's a shame this film was not what I'd been hoping for from the antipodean Master of cinema.
