'It was the final work in my shockumentaries trilogy'.

It's tempting to discuss this at length, but I don't want to over comment. Because that's what Tsurizaki Kiyotaka's approach is all about: letting the images express themselves and meet the viewer. Not to fall into the cynical trap of imposing a particular interpretation, reaction or judgement. Why is there no additional information? Because that would be redundant and childish. The viewer, as an adult, creates the meaning himself. It's all there already, because the photographer/director has done a remarkable job of editing. In fact, the images are so well blended that you almost reach the point you can't tell anymore the difference between Colombia, Thailand and Japan... Everything ends up forming a banal, apocalyptic continuum. Where does this pile of plastic and rubble come from? No comment, just the idea that disaster transcends borders. At the same time, culture also plays a central role. We revisit familiar places in Tsurizaki's work.Death, of course, is everywhere. We are facing the suffering of those who still live. The camera is never invasive. Life is pictured as well. Very vivid.Last but not least, let's not forget the soundtrack by the metal band Corrupted (from Osaka). When the guitar riff rings out over the aftermath of a natural disaster... Yes, "The Wasteland is real". It is tragic. It's sad and ugly in its beauty. It is somehow universal.I think The Wasteland is his masterpiece.

Probably The Most Boring Documentary Of All Time!

This documentary is basically a bunch of random footage of various things like buildings, dead people, garbage, people mutilating themselves and other various images all shown in at a snails pace with no commentary to support the images just metal music or sometimes atmospheric music. It's all pretty boring and uninteresting. Some of the times it comes off beautiful then it goes too long and becomes boring drivel once again. Don't ever watch this unless you need a cure for your insomnia.
