A Retro Noir Experiment That Surprises More Than It Stumbles

I quite applaud this film. Shot in an old-style black-and-white noir aesthetic, The Waves of Madness leans hard into its retro atmosphere and makes it work surprisingly well. It's incredible that this was filmed on a $20k budget, and honestly, knowing that only makes the end result more impressive.Listen, it's not everyone's cup of tea. At the beginning, I had real cringe moments where I thought this would spiral into absolutely atrocious B-grade, second-hand embarrassment territory. But to my surprise, it didn't.Once the story settles, with Agent Legrasse arriving on a seemingly deserted cruise ship after a distress call and immediately realising something is very wrong, the film begins to find its rhythm. It's decent, it's edgy, it's different. The 2D side-scrolling visuals give the whole thing a video-game feel, as if you're moving room-to-room inside a haunted level from some long-forgotten retro title. And while you'd think a feature-length film framed like this would be hard to follow, it actually plots along smoothly through its tight 60-minute runtime, creating a strangely pleasant and immersive environment. It's clear this was a passion project, but some of the effects and backdrops were genuinely impressive. I thoroughly enjoyed the hand-monster sequences, and the introduction of the Russian special forces adds a jolt of energy right when the story needs it. I also liked the crossover between therapeutic dialogue and action, and I adored the Lovecraftian approach, tone, and pacing as Legrasse's grip on reality starts to unravel. There isn't a hell of a lot to review because the film is small and contained, but it was a genuinely nice surprise. And after seeing the epilogue, I'd be all in for another film. These kinds of indie projects need to be applauded. It's clearly the work of a man pursuing his dream, his "personal legend", and he can be proud of having accomplished something many would only dream of.6/10.

A side-scrolling Lovecraftian action/horror movie that doesn't look like anything you've seen before

A side-scrolling Lovecraftian action/horror movie that doesn't look like anything you've seen before. I was dubious about this, the concept of a film using old computer game side scrolling scenes felt like a gimmick that would wear thin really quickly, I was even more concerned hen I started watching and the acting felt like a cross between over the top computer game cut screens and those noir films of the 30's.It wasn't long though before I was immersed in the story and found the whole aesthetic of the movie really worked with the storyline. All my preconceived ideas about this movie were wrong and I don't mind admitting that.

If you go into this with an open mind ..you'll love this

This movie had me intrigued from the moment I first heard about it because its premise is that it's "the first side-scrolling horror movie", and as far as I'm aware, that is a 100% true statement. The movie and story was good as it kept the pacing going with very little slow down along the way. The characters were limited to keep the action flowing in this and the focus on what was happening. Such a fun and interesting experiment! Really captures those PS1-era horror vibes to a superb degree - incredibly impressive from a technical perspective, and very well put-together in general. Lots of fun, lots of heart, and plenty of eldritch goodness. I'll happily watch a sequel if that ever gets made. Respect for trying something new in a cinema landscape of the same same.
