Daring French adventure yarn.

I am not that surprised by this new Guillaume Nicloux's feature. It's in the pure line of APOCALYPSE NOW or THIN RED LINE, or James Joyce or Joseph Conrad's novel. The tale of a man in search of an impossible task, search of himself, taking the pretext to avenge the murder of his brother. But not for wide audiences. All characters are fascinating, and the performances awesome. Especially Gérard Depardieu.

great film, an exploration of obsession and loss, with beautiful framing and great lighting.

Deeply immersed in and committed to the sensibility of one ambivalent and alienated young man. Some will find it false to history, but the story is one man's story and if he is racist, imperialist and misogynist that is both true to the period and to this man in it. There is no attempt to elicit sympathy for him, only comprehension. Incidentally beautiful to look at.

Significant contradictions

Throughout the film, I had difficulty convincing myself of the protagonist's character, who, while we know his goal from the beginning, follows a chaotic script and at the same time some contradictory directorial decisions that lead him to completely lose his center of gravity. Fortunately, some of the supporting roles are saved. The music is interesting, and there are diverse styles, mainly from our era and not from the 40s. Beautiful photography and cinematography. A moral issue may arise from the portrayal of the brutality of the French troops in a fetishistic and attractively stylized way, while the film is baptized as anti-war in its genre.
