Plot summary

People of Saitama Prefecture, who have been persecuted by Tokyoites for a long time, stand up for their freedom. Thanks to Momomi Hakuhodo (Fumi Nikaido) and the Saitama Liberation Front, laissez-passer is abolished. The people of Saitama Prefecture can once again enjoy their peaceful daily lives, but the Saitama Liberation Front heads toward its next goal. This leads to a big case.

Funny with the relevant background

This sequel to the 2019 movie plays with the same tropes, i.e. Deliberate over exaggerated acting (which by itself is quite impressive), stereotypes (positive or negative) about local prefectures and behaviors, and some subtle or not that subtle homosexual or asexual depiction of characters. And it plays all those tropes very well. Even more so that the first opus, the movie is funny as hell, provided one has the right references. "Speaking Japanese" is clearly not enough, it requires some understanding of modern and not so modern pop cultural trends or memes. One has to be able to make the difference between local accents and expressions (granted, quite typical). This sequel is definitely not a film that will be easily exported, compared to the first movie where the overall scenario was more "easy to grasp" for foreign audiences, even without getting all the references. .It's funny, very funny... if you came to IMDB for a review in English, it may mean you are considering a watch.... A sub will be tough, as play on words and local accents make some situation difficult to understand in writing. And a dub.... no idea how one could make a dub work....

Rei and Momomi Are Back!

Rei (Gackt) and Momomi (Fumi Nakaido) have saved Saitama and people are happier there now, but there is still trouble in other prefectures that are looked down upon by larger communities and Rei feels that it is his duty to try to save them too, while Momomi must try to convince the railway authorities that a rail line connecting all of Saitama would be a worthy project. Once on his way, though, Rei encounters more difficulties than he thought, from trying to aid another revolutionary, Kai Kikyo (Anne Watanabe), to learning that the evil Governor Kashoji (Ainosuke Kataoka) is planning to turn all of Japan (and then the world) into imitations of Osaka! And there's only a little time left before his evil plan comes to fruition....This is the sequel to the very funny "Fly Me to the Saitama," which introduced Rei and Momomi, and it's just as funny as the first film, although I suspect that there are a lot of sly comments on contemporary Japanese culture that I just didn't get. For example, at one point two facing armies try to intimidate each other by unrolling large posters of film stars from specific regions of Japan - I had no idea who those actors were, but a more knowledgeable audience would get it and the scene was still very funny to me despite my ignorance. This is one of those films where if you don't question the logic too much, you will have a great time. I think one can see this without having seen the first film, but once you do you'll probably look for the earlier one anyway because the characters are just so adorable. And I'll never think of Jumping Jacks the same way again!
