Sleaze Without the Thrills

While the title promised some campy Euro-spy absurdity, 'Two Female Spies with Flowered Panties' ('Ópalo de Fuego: Mercaderes del Sexo') delivered something far less amusing and far more tiresome, unfortunately. Ostensibly an adult spy thriller, the film barely bothers with espionage at all, using a wafer-thin plot as an excuse for relentless and joyless exploitation.The narrative, such as it is, lurches from one ill-defined scenario to another, with the "spies" existing less as characters than as props. Any potential for parody or playful genre subversion is squandered, replaced by nudity so constant it becomes oddly monotonous. Throughout the film, there is an absence of any actual "flowered panties", the film is so committed to excess that it forgets suggestion, style, or wit entirely. Forgetting its title on top is inexcusable.Technically, it's cheap even by exploitation standards: flat direction, indifferent performances, and the version I watched was an English dub that only added to the unintentional mess. Unlike better cult oddities of the era, there's little here that circles back around to entertaining nonsense.In the end, 'Ópalo de Fuego' isn't shocking, sexy, or thrilling - just repetitive and vaguely uncomfortable. A curiosity for completists of Euro-trash cinema, perhaps, but for everyone else like myself, it's a reminder that outrageous titles don't guarantee outrageous fun.

Don't Watch The English Dub Version.

Jess Franco is never going to be regarded as a Kubrick but many of his films do have a certain something. On many occasions that 'something' was Lina Romay who always 'perked' proceedings up.

This isn't one of Franco's 'better' movies but it is ruined completely by one of the worst english dub tracks I've heard. I much prefer to watch films in the original language with subtitles and this proves why. The stereotypical voices, turgid screams and totally uninterested delivery just turns this in to a complete waste of time and effort

I've often wondered how many Cult films from the 60's/70's could be improved if they were re-cut with modern voiceover acting teams.

Sometimes the charm of a bad dubbing track can make a movie funnier but this one just made my teeth grate. It truly is horrendous.

I intend to seek out the Spanish version of this to see if it improves things.
