It was actually not all that bad...

Needless to say that I had indeed never even heard about this 2025 action thriller "Unseen Enemy" prior to getting to sit down to watch it. However, I have to be honest here and say that I wasn't exactly harboring the biggest of expectations, as the movie's cover seemed rather generic. Still, since it was a movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I opted to give it a fair chance. Now I have to say that movies that are written by, directed by and starring the one and the same guy usually sets off multiple alarm bells in the back of my head, as such movies tend to be questionable affairs. And "Unseen Enemy" happened to have Salvatore Samperi in all those three roles, so it wasn't looking great for the movie before it even started.Writer Salvatore Samperi put together a fair enough script. I mean, it was exactly Award-winning material, but the movie had some good moments and was actually adequately entertaining. One thing that "Unseen Enemy" definitely had working in favor for it, was the fact that I was not familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list. The acting performances in the movie were fair. And there were actually also some nice action sequences throughout the course of the movie, which helped spruce things up.Watchable for what it was, but "Unseen Enemy" is not a noteworthy action thriller, and there are far better movies of the same genre out there. Nor is it a movie that warrants more than a single viewing. My rating of directors Mathew John Pearson and Salvatore Samperi's 2025 action thriller "Unseen Enemy" lands on a five out of ten stars.

WORTH SEEING UNSEEN ENEMY

Unseen Enemy is an ambitious Australian indie action B-FILM in the style of OZPLOTATION that deserves credit for aiming high in a genre our industry rarely tackles. It's made with clear passion, features some striking locations, and stages several action sequences with real energy and competence. On that level alone, the film earns points - it's refreshing to see Australian filmmakers attempt gun-play and martial arts on this scale. As an indie project, the low-budget elements are forgivable. What's harder to overlook is the uneven acting. The two leads are clearly skilled martial artists, but their lack of acting experience shows, particularly in emotional and dialogue-driven moments. The Iranian antagonist looks the part and has genuine screen presence, and with further acting development he could be very strong - he is arguably the standout of the cast. Unfortunately, many of the other performers feel inexperienced and struggle to bring authenticity or weight to their characters, which hurts the overall believability. The story itself is clunky and often unfocused. Rather than building a strong central drive, the film plays more like a series of loosely connected scenes designed to showcase fights, firearms, and stunts. The missing-girl subplot lacks urgency, the reveal is handled awkwardly, and the stakes never quite feel high enough. Tonally, the mix of an Iranian villain, Japanese yakuza elements, and an Aussie bogan drug-dealer pimp makes the film feel scattered rather than cohesive.Where Unseen Enemy falls short is in conviction and emotional depth - there's little sense of real heart behind the spectacle. Still, it remains a terrific effort by a young team working with limited resources. Congratulations to everyone involved for taking on something this bold. With a stronger screenplay and more experienced actors, this team absolutely has the potential to deliver something special in the future, especially with a better screenplay and phenomenal actors.
