Average and full of clichés

I'm a fan of Mircea and have seen all his movies, but sadly Vecina isn't among his best. While it has a few genuinely funny moments, much of the humor falls flat, and the story often feels forced, dull or irritating, packed with clichés or unrelatable scenes. A disappointing and uneven effort from an otherwise talented filmmaker. The idea had great potential, but the execution is poor.

Next door neighbor brings down the house

The last thing the world needs right now is another movie where local Romanian internet star Mircea Bravo a/k/a Mircea Popa and his simple-minded yet wise grandmother from the countryside Tanti Lenuta a/k/a Lenuta Moldovan go into more mischief from which they learn more life lessons that we've heard one too many times already. The trans-generational duo is everywhere in this country, from the internet to cable TV commercials and from our phone screens to our television sets.Yet this cliché-ridden and meme-driven comedy is carried above and beyond its sitcom monotony by its fascist villain Doina--in an award-worthy debut performance by Cristina Gabriela Buburuz--whose determination and drive to meet her agenda elevates and transforms the entire movie into an Orwellian nightmare whose comedy now serves a higher purpose, that of easing the tension and keeping us from tearing through the screen and starting yet another revolution like we did nearly 30 years ago. If you think I am exaggerating then you haven't seen the movie. Trust me, it goes places you're not expecting. It's also worth noting that in lightheaded comedies like this--and in comedies in general--villains aren't truly evil. They are mostly irritating, their purpose non-existent or unexplained and they are not defeated as much as they are converted in the end when, inevitably, a party starts. Well, there are no parties in "Vecina"--except one that Doina inevitably brings to a half--and the villain here is truly evil.Ironically, what helps its villain is also the movie's biggest flaw, its lack of insight. When the tenants get together to discuss their totalitarian archnemesis, there is barely any details given as to her motivations and what made her this way. "She needs love" someone says at one point before the idea gets perverted down to cheap laughs. This is frustrating but also helps to keep Doina into the shadows from which she often spawns and help paint her as this unattainable unstoppable force who will mercilessly ruin the lives of anyone who dares disturb her tranquility. The movie's insight is a bit more deep when dealing with its protagonist Andrei (Mircea Popa), a neurotic and skittish high school math teacher struggling to maintain his relationship with his more mature girlfriend Maria (Ioana Maria Repciuc). Naturally, he turns to his grandmother for advice who doesn't tell him anything he doesn't already know as much as she scolds him--which is what he actually needs. Even the romance angle is cliché, but it's deeper than anything Popa has done so far. But, of course, this is a comedy so does it brings the laughs? Mostly yes, albeit more from its wacky side characters which are just passengers in the film, leaving once they served their purpose. What remains are Andrei's neighbors; a retired cop, a stoner and an attractive yoga instructor--I'll let you guess which one of these is a female. Of course, they would be nothing without their villain whose evil is so real and homemade that it warps the movie into something equally ridiculous and mind-blowing in order to contain itself. And in doing so, it makes some of its pieces fall into place just barely enough to be worth your time.

Unethical and a single story narrative

I didn't like it for two main reasons.#1 Ethics. In the film, there are two sides: the neighbor and the others. The neighbor makes some mistakes, but overall she's asking for the law to be respected. The others want everything to be fine, but they also want to ignore the law. What the "others" do seems to me a form of aggression. And the "others" are portrayed as cool, fun, entertaining, everything's pleasant. They are the cool & funny guys, while the neighbor is a negative person. You can joke about anything, but there's still such a thing as ethics - and I don't think the problem in Romania is that people respect the law too much, or that they care too much about it.If you make jokes about abuse, it may be legally allowed, but it's not exactly OK.It reminded me of a recent news story:"Young man from Ilfov threatened with beating by neighbors after calling Distrigaz" - YouTube#2 The narrative line. There's only one storyline, no subplots. One topic, no secondary threads. Also, just one emotion - laughter - and nothing else throughout the entire film. It's possible to create a comedy movie focused strictly on humor and nothing else, but it's a difficult thing to pull off.And I don't think they succeeded.
