A Brutal, Poetic Homage to B-Movie Cinema

Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash is a rare and courageous film in the Indonesian cinema landscape. It's a bold adaptation of Eka Kurniawan's novel, presented by director Edwin as a stylish homage to Indonesian B-movie action films of the 80s and 90s.I give this film an 8/10 rating. This is a "Very Good" film that excels artistically and thematically, but its highly specific (niche) style means it is not for everyone. Why the 8/10 Rating?Total Artistic Vision: The 8/10 score highly respects the director's consistent vision. The film's intentionally gritty, "grimy" aesthetic and faded color palette are deliberate artistic choices. It successfully resurrects the feel of cheap action films of the past, complete with raw and brutal fight scenes.Thematic Depth Behind the Action: Beneath its brutal action, this film is a smart exploration of toxic masculinity, trauma, and repression. The central premise (which I will not spoil) serves as a powerful metaphor for these issues, providing unexpected emotional weight. The film doesn't reach a higher score (like 9 or 10) purely because its style is extremely specific and challenging. For audiences expecting a glossy modern action film or a conventional drama, its storytelling might feel absurd, slow in parts, or even "ugly." However, that intentional "ugliness" is its strength. It is a challenging and intellectually satisfying piece of art.

some feelings

I didn't watch "Jiaoma hall meeting", but only said a few I've seen. I feel that Locarno is weak as a whole this year. Among these films, this one is undoubtedly the most prominent in typology and author style. Although the story doesn't impress me very much, it's gratifying to see that there are directors in Indonesia who are willing to tell the story according to the shooting method of Hong Kong films in the last century. There is almost no such inheritance in Hong Kong. On the contrary, it is an interesting cultural phenomenon that young creators in other countries have gained the shade.
