Lipstick, Lies, and a Very Merry Mystery

This is such a beautiful show, and seeing a fresh cast of Black actors and actresses immediately made me want to support it. Representation aside, the writing actually holds up - the script was engaging, well-paced, and surprisingly layered for a mystery series that also leans into warmth and charm. The makeup and fashion deserve a special mention because they were consistently on point. Nothing felt lazy or generic; everyone looked intentional, polished, and expressive, which added to the overall atmosphere of the show. What I really enjoyed was how the characters partnered together to solve the mysteries. The teamwork felt organic, and over time I found myself genuinely invested in their dynamic rather than just the whodunit aspect. The emotional threads were just as compelling. Watching the tension between the mother and daughter was heartbreaking - those fights felt raw and painfully realistic. Troy and Bea's relationship issues were honestly super crazy, but in a way that felt earned, and I was glad to see them actually work through their problems instead of dragging the drama unnecessarily.Dr. Whittaker and Grace having an affair? Messy, unexpected, and impossible to ignore. And that lipstick - absolutely iconic. A small detail, but one that somehow became unforgettable.Overall, Very Merry Mystery balances heart, style, and intrigue really well. It's cozy, dramatic, and emotionally grounded - the kind of show that pulls you in quietly and keeps you watching.

Meh...

Granted, I can't claim to say that I had any particular expectations to this 2025 Holiday romance titled "Very Merry Mystery" from writer Andrea Reindl and director Winnifred Jong as I sat down to watch it. I had the opportunity to watch it, and did so solely because it was a movie that I had never heard about, and thus obviously never seen before."Very Merry Mystery" was not particularly a movie that entertained me much, as I struggled to get swept away by the narrative. It was just difficult for me to buy into it and thus found little entertainment here.I was actually not familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list. And that was one of the better things about this movie, as I do enjoy watching new and unfamiliar talents on the screen. The acting performances in the movie were fair. Now, I am sure that there is an audience out there who will enjoy this movie far more than I did. Perhaps a young adult female audience.Hardly a movie that will become a Christmas special, as it didn't really have much of any Christmas feel to it. And it most definitely is not a movie that I will return to watch a second time.My rating of director Winnifred Jong's 2025 movie "Very Merry Mystery" lands on a very generous four out of ten stars.

Very Merry Mystery Needs To Be A Series

I have a confession. Many "feel good" movies make me gag because they are often a saccharine fest. The reason I decided to give this movie a try was due to its all-black cast and POC behind the scenes notably Winnifred Jong and Andrea Reindl. The cast was incredible. The writing was crisp plus the direction was spot on!Now the true test. The movie captured my attention.I stayed glued to the screen. No pausing the movie to do other things. No perusing my phone at any point. This movie is fun and thoughtful!I should say I was disappointed to learn that this is a one-off movie. I had hoped it was part of a series.OWN network personnel are you reading this?Yeesss! Me who is extremely finicky wants a series. To the Powers In Charge please please please turn this into a series. You have an absolute winner here!
