Turbulence at 30,000 Feet (and in the Mind)

After a few moderately convincing trial runs, Boîte noire (with Pierre Niney) marked Yann Gozlan's first genuine success in the thriller department. With Visions, we're still in the world of airplanes... but not in that of success.The main criticism one can level at it - a flaw shared by many French genre filmmakers - is its urge to more or less skilfully reproduce what already exists elsewhere. Visions is a blue-white-red variation on the "bourgeois paranoid erotic thriller": a bit David Lynch, a bit Dario Argento, a lot Brian De Palma.There are good ideas - the often disorienting editing mimics the feeling that Estelle, an airline pilot, is in a permanent state of jet lag - but by relying simultaneously on unspoken tensions, fragmented memories, and a deliberately murky play on timelines and points of view that ultimately blows apart a logic we thought was more or less rational, Visions ends up juggling too many balls for its own good.Modestly copying from the cool kids isn't great, but it can pass when comparisons are limited. Copying them and adding a pile of personal flourishes because you're convinced you're actually better than them and just needed a little push to get started is often the royal road to ridicule. Visions doesn't quite go that far - but its personal contributions feel more like acts of self-sabotage than anything else.

Lame

Pretty lame mainstream mash-up of David Lynch's Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive. The script is awful. Don't watch it.The actors are OK. Sounddesign is awful. Camera is OK. Direction is OK too. But the whole movie is simply bad. Because of the predictable storyline.I think it's OK when you will do a movie with David Lynch in mind. But don't try to copy the master.This whole movie screams: Yeahhh I'm David Lynch baby. But it doesn't work. Because you can't copy David Lynch.At the end you have a movie which tries to copy David Lynch but it doesn't work it all.The script is too bad, sorry.
