A hidden gem

Out of the plethora of "movies about nothing", aka the plague of realism, which is quintessential for 21th century romanian cinema, here comes Marian Crisan with a hidden gem. This movie is indeed a drama, it masterfully ticks all the boxes which makes it so. What I like the most about it is the fact that, although it touches some aspects that only a romanian could understand, the main idea surfaces clearly during the whole movie and especially at the end.The story takes place one month after Romania changed sides, from allies of Germany we became allies of USA and Russia, but in remote areas like the ones described in the movie this change wasn't common knowledge; actually Nicu says at a certain point that his father is fighting the russians, although the russians were our allies at this point. Long story short, those were chaotic times.Anyway, regardless of the viewer's knowledge of Romania's history during WW2, the message is quite clear: war corrupts everyone, violence births violence!Nota bene: the way the Red Army "heroes" treated Nicu's horses is characteristic to the whole liberation of the eastern front / countries. We just changed enslavers.

War-boy is Romania

As a great journey, both in the past and future, the movie takes the viewer on a metaphor of the Romanian people / country legacy roadmap and the timeline perspective of peaceful people engaged in wars by force. The main character is presented as a collective consciousness of the Romanian pheasants, forced to deal with foreigners and new proclaimed masters of their own land.

While engaging with new situations and challenges, the main character remains resilient to its own task and goal : to keep its possession of 2 horses.

Ultimately, the forces around him creates a situation that Romania is currently engaged in, meaning having to deal with hunger, frustration and unknown enemies.
