Plot summary

Early summer, Keiichi had just moved to a remote mountain village. As he becomes close friends with a group of girls, he was enjoying his life in the village. However when he starts to become suspicious that his friends may be deeply involved in successive murders that occur every summer, the situation around Keiichi gradually starts to turn into something more sinister.

Lacking important tropes and development

The important thing about the story in Higurashi is the characters. The tragedy and horror have no sting if you don't love the characters as people. I didn't care about the girls in the movie because they didn't really have any character, all of the aspects of their personalities were absolutely lost in translation to live action. This is likely just a writing problem. I didn't care for the acting for the character of Keiichi either. These kids are supposed to be intimately close friends that would do anything for each other. I get no sense of genuine affection between them. I was really disappointed because I wanted to care and just couldn't.

Don't watch this

The Higurashi when they cry Visual Novel is amazing. The animes are great. This movie is a disaster. Don't waste your time.First of all a 1.5 hour movie can't really do a 100 hour story justice. Secondly this movie as a standalone itself is a true disaster.Don't waste your time watching it.Instead go and play the Visual novel which is truly one of the best experiences I've had as far as story goes.For English speakers I would recommend buying the Higurashi when they cry, and the Higurashi when they cry Rei on Steam, and then mod it using the 07th mod. This will add the latest console sprites and backgrounds, full Japanese voice overs, lipsync and about 13-15 EXTRA FREE CONSOLE ARCS, including 3 extra and different endings from the original. Best play order would be Chapters 1 through 8 so you get the ORIGINAL STORY, and then play the console arcs.
