A Beautiful Shell for an Empty Story

Some films seem designed more to sell postcards than to tell a real story, and Wolfgang is a clear example. Everything looks spotless: Barcelona, Paris, the pristine homes, the polished interiors... but there's no real emotion behind it. What we see is a showcase disguised as a drama. The movie keeps pushing for easy tears from the very beginning. Everything is calculated to make the audience empathize, but it never feels genuine. The characters are stereotypes we've seen countless times: the clumsy father, the troubled prodigy child, the unbearable grandmother... even the supporting roles feel like they've been copied and pasted. Whatever the scene, you already know what's going to happen. The child protagonist, instead of inspiring tenderness, ends up being exhausting. His portrayal as a "special genius" is so overused that he feels more like a screenwriting trick than a nuanced character. The father isn't any better: exaggerated to the point of caricature, written without subtlety. It all reinforces the sense that we're not watching an honest portrayal, but rather emotional manipulation poorly disguised. The only one who manages to shine is Anna Castillo, as the psychologist and piano teacher. Her role brings a bit of freshness and naturalness that stands out among so much artificiality. Whenever she's on screen, the film breathes a little. But it's not enough to balance a story weighed down by clichés.In the end, Wolfgang feels more like a product than a movie. It tries to move you through formulas and well-worn tropes, but ends up doing the opposite: pushing viewers away with a forced dramatization and postcard-like imagery. There are Sunday TV films with fewer pretensions that manage to surprise far more. Here, everything feels too calculated, too perfect, too empty.

A melancholic and engaging family film, full of father-son drama and brief touches of humor.

The life of a ten-year-old boy (Jordi Catalán) is turned upside down after the death of his mother, whose last wish was for Wolfgang to return to his father, whom he hasn't even met. The boy has an extraordinary IQ of 152, but displays symptoms of autism. His grandmother (Àngels Gonyalons), who recently took him in, hands him over to his shocked father, Carles (Miki Esparbé), who reluctantly takes him in. Carles faces the challenge with enthusiasm and determination, but things get worse and worse. Wolfgang can't stand his messiness and disorganization and considers him a "low-class" due to his lack of intellect and wisdom. So, secretly, Wolfgang plans to achieve his dream: to enter the Grimald Music Academy in Paris, where his mother studied, and become the best pianist in the world. While Carles is a less-than-reputable actor who claims to have had important film roles, in reality, he only auditions or plays very minor roles.Miki Esparbé and Jordi Catalán star in this family-oriented film, developing a pleasant relationship between the protagonists, which oscillates between comedy and drama in a bittersweet and sensitive story about parenthood. Based on the novel Wolfgang (Extraordinario) by Laia Aguilar, it focuses on the unique relationship between a gifted boy with autism spectrum disorder and his father, a somewhat unsuccessful and very busy actor. In addition to these two notable lead actors, who give terrific performances, the film features an excellent cast of supporting actors, such as Ángels Gonyalons, Anna Castillo, Nausicaa Bonnín, Berto Romero, and a special appearance by J. A. Bayona as himself. The feature film features magnificent photography by cinematographer Sergi Vilanova Claudín. As well as a sensitive soundtrack by Clara Peya, including moving songs .The film was competently directed by Javier Ruiz Caldera. He was born in Barcelona and is a good director and editor, he made some short films and is an expert in comedies, especially known for Spanish Movie (2009), Promoción Fantasma (2012) and Tres Bodas De Más (2013) and adaptations based on comics such as Anacleto Agente Secreto, Super Lopez and the zombie comedy set in the Spanish Civil War, Malnazidos. Wolfgang's rating 7.5/10. Above ordinary average. The story will appeal to fans of family films with soft dramas, as it really is a feel-good movie.

A sweet nice family film

Wolfgang is a ten year old kid with dirty blond curly hair. He's autistic and quite a genius playing the piano. At the start of the film we learn his mother has just died and his grandma tells him she (his mother) decided he should live, from now on, with his father. An absent father who he has never seen. The kid is a genius, with a very high IQ, but with also high problems understanding how both adults and neurotypicals work. This is a film that will make you cry some tears, possibly. A feel good one. About personal growing, for the kid, the father and the grandma. About accepting each other and coming to terms with reality. As it's typical with Catalan films, it's somehow a small film, not lots of action, few actors, most scenes have just a couple or three actors at most, mostly centered on dialogues and relations between them. The pace might seem slow, but it's adequate to the story.
