Plot summary

Maryam accidentally killed her husband Nasser and is sentenced to death. The only person who can save her is Mona, Nasser's daughter. All Mona has to do is appear on a TV show and forgive Maryam. But forgiveness proves difficult when they are forced to relive the past.

Horrifying reality

I enjoy Iranian cinema and am a huge fan of its recent Oscar winners, A Separation and The Salesman. Like those films, this movie is also an interesting take on Iran's complex and patriarchal society.The film itself is slow until the last 30 minutes. The horrifying thing is that the film's concept actually exists in many places around the world. The duality of a society that both needs educated, successful women and discards them is starling and horrible. 7 out of 10 stars.

Shouldn´t this case be taken up in a court of law?

Maryam is a young woman. She is convicted of the murder of her much older husband. Mona, Maryam´s late husband´s daughter, has a decision to make. Will she, in a reality TV show, forgive Maryam and save her from the death penalty?I must say that I´m very confused. Shouldn´t this case be taken up in a court of law? I really think so. And some characters in this movie made, in my opinion, a little ill-considered decisions. But yes, I can also see Maryam´s and Mona´s strong emotions. And those emotions made my rating go from 6 to 7 stars.Would I recommend "Yalda: A Night for Forgiveness"? Hm, I´m not entirely sure. Not everyone will probably like this movie. It has low-key action if you ask me. You should, in other words, avoid this movie if you love action above all else. At least according to me.

Deeply uncomfortable, powerful film.

I have lived in places like Saudi which was pretty horrible, but never visited Iran. And after watching this depiction of a really depraved misogynistic society, I am very glad I didn't.This production reminded me very strongly of another (series) about misogyny, namely, The Handmaid's Tale. I was struck with horror and disgust at the way in which Iranian women are treated by men, the drab crummy clothes they wear.I don't think even in Saudi the concept of a "temporary marriage" exists, in which, typically, a young woman agrees to cohabit with an old man for a year or two in return for money. How disgusting.The actors did a good job and the plot kept me guessing. I am not going to watch this again.
