Very awkwardly weird and inappropriate movie

Year of the Fox is a coming-of-age drama that aims to tackle heavy, uncomfortable themes but ultimately struggles to present them in a coherent or responsible way. While the film clearly wants to say something about identity, insecurity, and the pressures placed on young people, its execution often feels confused and ethically messy. Instead of offering insight, it frequently leaves the viewer unsettled for the wrong reasons. At the center of the film is a troubling dynamic involving age, attraction, and self-worth. The relationship portrayed feels less like a meaningful exploration of vulnerability and more like a narrative misstep that's never fully interrogated. Rather than questioning the imbalance or examining its consequences, the film often treats it as a given, which makes the story feel uncomfortable and, at times, irresponsible. The title itself hints at this imbalance, but the screenplay never clearly defines what it wants the audience to take away from it.The screenplay is where the film struggles the most. It jumps between serious issues such as body shaming, substance abuse, and emotional trauma without giving any of them the space or care they deserve. Certain moments involving drugs, alcohol, and assault are introduced and then brushed past, creating a sense that these topics are being used more for shock value than for meaningful storytelling. The narrative frequently feels backward, as if scenes were arranged without a clear emotional throughline. From a directorial standpoint, it feels like there was an intention to create something raw and honest, but the lack of focus prevents the film from ever landing its message. The tone shifts constantly, making it hard to tell whether the film wants to be reflective, provocative, or cautionary. As a result, the emotional beats don't hit as strongly as they should, and the film never truly commits to a clear perspective.Performances are serviceable, but they aren't enough to elevate the material. Even when moments hint at something deeper or more authentic, the surrounding narrative choices undercut that potential. The characters often feel trapped by the script rather than driven by genuine development, which makes it difficult to connect with them or care about where they end up.In the end, Year of the Fox is a film with ideas but no clear direction. It touches on serious aspects of life, but its inconsistent storytelling and questionable thematic handling prevent it from making a lasting impact. It's not outright terrible, but it's uncomfortable, unfocused, and ultimately forgettable. This is the kind of movie you watch once, reflect on briefly, and then move on from without any desire to revisit.
