More of a dumb, unnecessary remake instead of a genius remake.

Bad Genius is a remake of the Thai film of the same name from 2017. This remake was directed and partly written by J. C. Lee. With this remake he makes his directorial debut. The brilliant, scholar Lynn Kang (Callina Liang) would like to continue studying at a university, but unfortunately she and her father Meng Kang (Benedict Wong) do not have the money for this. In order to get money, Lynn decides to abuse her intelligence and help other students by letting them copy the correct answers for school tests. In return, Lynn is paid by them. With this money she hopes to be able to go to university, but when she is caught for her false actions, she risks her chances of still being admitted. This more western remake seems to modernize the film a bit, not doing much special than just copying the original version. This remake also seems to have been put together a bit too quickly, so that you do not really get to know most of the characters, so that you do not really care about them. This can make it feel a bit long-winded at times.Due to the rushed, copied aspects, most of the cast also don't really manage to do anything special with their roles. Benedict Wong comes out best as a caring father, who tries to be there for his daughter despite his financial problems. Unfortunately, he doesn't have such a big role in the film.

Bold Moves and Heavy Consequences on the Path to Success

It was ok. I didn't watch the Thai original

I think the story of cheating rich kids was an interesting one. Putting a poor Asian girl with a single dad and a black kid as 2 of the leads is very progressive but might feel fake to some.

I'm glad they got caught. Teachers aren't idiots.

I don't think they needed to drive up just how hard the SATs were to cheat in. You can bring programs on your graphing calculator that aren't allowed. It doesn't help much. You can put a dictionary in your calculator which can help with vocab if you memorize the questions for the scantron. Rich people used to get stand-ins to take the test for them. People write on the labels of water bottles. And compared to Asian entrance exams, studying for the SATs are a joke. Some districts give extra time (oh our students have disabilities). It detracts from the movie. The SATs don't even mean that much as more top schools are removing it as a requirement. Just glad they didn't do the usual Asian girl romance.

It takes a bit away from the movie when you make the least serious standardized test globally sound super important. Any rich guy who can't get a 1000 on their SATs can't get their grades high enough to get in through legacy.
