A Distinctly Different Turkish Horror Adaptation

"Cadi" (2024) stands out from most Turkish horror films, mainly because it's based on a novel and carries a very different tone and structure. That alone earns it some credit in my book. The film takes inspiration from a well-regarded piece of literature, but since some changes were already made, I think a more comprehensive revision could have worked better. Instead of being set in an earlier period, it might have been more engaging if the story had taken place in modern times.From a technical standpoint, there are a few minor issues. In some scenes, when the characters wore white, the lighting made them look unnaturally bright and somewhat off. The soundtrack also occasionally overpowered the dialogue - and since this isn't a dialogue-heavy film to begin with, that made certain moments harder to follow.Putting those flaws aside, I really liked the lead performances - the acting was strong, and the overall atmosphere worked well. Considering everything together, I'd say it's an above-average Turkish thriller that's definitely worth watching for its unique approach and tone.

Dissapointment

Unfortunately, this movie, which I loved the book of, was a huge disappointment. If they were going to throw away everything Huseyin Rahmi was trying to say and create something new, it should have at least been on the same level with equally meaningful lessons. The newly created story is quite shallow, leagues away from the feminism that a man living in the late 1800s possessed and wrote about.If a historical atmosphere was created, I would expect the scientific facts to be consistent with the time period. I doubt that it would have been possible to reveal multiple personality disorder through hypnosis in 1912. There was absolutely no need for a Turkish-style Split.While the costume design was successful, the lighting was disturbing, and the acting wasn't very pleasing.
