Definitely need a lot of reworking

California King (2025) is a comedy that feels like it never quite understands what it wants to be, resulting in a film that struggles to generate genuine laughs, momentum, or narrative purpose. On paper, the concept seems like it could work-there's room for absurdity, character-driven humor, and a light, breezy tone-but the execution consistently falls short of that potential. Rather than building a cohesive comedic vision, the movie relies on disconnected scenes and awkward setups that never evolve into something meaningful or memorable.Victoria Justice is clearly positioned as the film's main draw, but the screenplay does her no favors. She has presence and screen appeal, yet the material she's given is thin and uninspired, offering little room to showcase timing, depth, or even basic comedic rhythm. The film often feels as though it expects her to carry scenes purely on familiarity rather than strong writing, which leaves her performance feeling underutilized. Instead of elevating the story, her role becomes emblematic of the film's broader issue: surface-level choices without substance underneath. The supporting cast fares no better. Many of the characters feel oddly cast and poorly defined, as if they were selected without a clear understanding of how they fit into the story. Their interactions lack chemistry, and their comedic beats rarely land, making large portions of the film feel uncomfortable rather than amusing. What should be playful chaos instead comes across as flat and directionless, with jokes that feel forced or prematurely abandoned.Direction and screenplay appear noticeably disconnected. The writing introduces ideas that are never fully explored, while the direction fails to sharpen or unify those ideas into a consistent tone. Scenes drift without purpose, pacing becomes uneven, and the film repeatedly misses opportunities to escalate situations into something funnier or more engaging. It often feels like a first draft that never went through the refinement process needed to tighten humor and clarify intent.Ultimately, California King is a film defined by missed opportunities. It isn't offensively bad, but it is frustratingly unfocused and forgettable. With stronger collaboration between writer and director-and a clearer understanding of its comedic identity-it could have been a light, enjoyable watch. Instead, it settles into mediocrity, making it difficult to recommend to anyone looking for a genuinely entertaining comedy.

Enjoy this for what it is

I gave this a 9 just to even out the ridiculously low ratings here. This movie is no Shawshank Redemption but it's also not pretending to be. There is a simple plot (kidnapping gone awry trope) that quickly becomes anything but simple as the story unravels. Getting to the ending is worth the ride. The characters are goofy but likeable. Bonus points seeing Joel McHale cast as the irate yet dashing antagonist. Jimmy Tatro (giving some Markie Wahlberg energy) and Travis Bennett may not provide big, bold laughs but there are laughs nonetheless. Briana Price acts as the new but grounding sheriff in town. If you enjoy buddy-cop comedies or the highs and lows of "bro" friendships, then settle in for an easy and fun watch.
