Plot summary

During a nighttime stroll, Giorgio, a burnt-out painter, encounters the beautiful Emanuelle, whom he makes his new muse. What he doesn't know is that Emanuelle has gotten herself into a dangerous deal with gangsters.

Not my Emmanuelle

To be fair, Emmanuelle (the original and I may have added an additional l at the end .. I forget how it is written) is not ... does not belong to one person ... she is a public figure and she is for some maybe even a treasure.That said, I understand that it is easier finance and publicity wise to call your character (and movie) with a known name. Not sure you do yourself many favors after people watch it though ... I've seen worse movies, but I might have enjoyed this more if this was called something different ... associations and such ...

"In Manila, pleasure and danger are the same currency."

This film has nothing left to do with the adult films of the past. None. Not even remotely.The old Emanuelle films weren't particularly good either and certainly not without problems but they knew exactly what they were. They had a style, an aesthetic, a sense of self. Exotic locations were actually used, often kitschy, but visually present. There was a certain exploitation charm that has since gained cult status. Here? None of that.The story makes no sense. Not in the sense of being "complex," but in the sense of being "thrown together without logic." At some point the film heads off in directions that lead nowhere. Things happen because they have to happen, not because they make narrative sense. And by the end, you're left asking: why?The acting is terrible. Zero authenticity, zero credibility. It feels like no one involved really wanted to be there and you can see that in every single scene.But the most absurd thing: an Italian painter travels to Manila to visit his friend also Italian and what language do they speak to each other? English. Not Italian. English. It's so blatantly implausible that it borders on ridiculous. As if no one spent even a second thinking about how people actually talk to each other.Manila as a setting? Wasted. The city isn't used, isn't staged, isn't made tangible. It could have been anywhere. The exotic backdrop the title promises? It doesn't exist.Emanuelle: World's Intrigue in Manila is neither an erotic film, nor a thriller, nor a drama. It's simply badly made. Story, acting, direction everything falls apart and this has nothing to do with the kind of trashy charm these films are sometimes granted. This is just loveless.Anyone familiar with the classic Emanuelle films and expecting a modern reinterpretation will be disappointed. Anyone expecting a halfway functional film will be disappointed. Anyone hoping to see Manila will be disappointed.This film is a misfire in every possible way.

But why...?

Truth be told, then I harbored zero expectations when I sat down to watch the 2025 movie "Emanuelle's World: Intrigue In Manila", as the "Emanuelle" movies from the past weren't exactly stellar movies in terms of proper entertainment. But on the off-chance that writer Antonio Tentori would have changed the nature of the franchise, I opted to give the movie a fair chance.Writer Antonio Tentori didn't change the franchise. It just carried on in the same monotonous and semi-pointless narrative, and it was a pretty shallow storyline. So you're not in for anything grand here. But hey, if you enjoyed the old "Emanuelle" movies in the franchise, then you might actually find something resembling enjoyment in this 2025 movie.Needless to say that I was, of course, not familiar with a single actor or actress that starred in this swing and a miss of a movie. The acting performances were actually fair enough, despite the fact that they had very little to work with in terms of script, characters and dialogue.Some times it is better to let sleeping corpses lie. And the "Emanuelle" franchise is one such case.My rating of director Red Turner's 2025 movie "Emanuelle's World: Intrigue In Manila" lands on a generous three out of ten stars.
